The Goya Awards were created by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 1986.

The following list shows the list of all the winners of the Goya Award for the best leading male performance since the first edition of 1986.

The actor who has won the greatest number of Goya awards for "best leading male performance" is Javier Bardem, with 5 awards, followed by Alfredo Landa, Fernando Fernán Gómez, Luis Tosar and Javier Gutiérrez with 2 awards.

Javier Bardem, with 10 nominations, is the actor with the most nominations in the category of best leading male performance, of which he has won 5, the last one for his role in El buen patrón .

The actors who have won the Goya award for "best leading male performance" and "best supporting male performance" are: Fernando Fernán Gómez, Juan Echanove, Carmelo Gómez, Javier Bardem, Eduard Fernández, Luis Tosar, Juan Diego, Antonio de la Torre and Javier Camara.

The only actor who has received two nominations for the same character is Imanol Arias, who was nominated in the 2nd edition (1987) for El Lute: camina o reventa and in the 3rd edition (1988) for El Lute II: mañana ser libre (both films directed by Vicente Aranda), playing the role of the criminal and fugitive Eleuterio Sánchez Rodríguez “El Lute”. He did not win the award for either performance.

The character that has been interpreted the most times and has been a candidate for the Goya award for "best leading male performance" is that of the dictator Francisco Franco, with 3 candidacies: Juan Diego played him in Dragon Rapide (1st edition, 1986), José Soriano played Franco's double in Wait for me in heaven (3rd edition, 1988) and Juan Echanove played him in Madregilda (8th edition, 1993). The award was only obtained by the latter.

There are two actors who have been candidates despite not speaking Spanish in the film and having to be dubbed: Jean Rochefort and Ryan Reynolds.
