The Goya Awards were created by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 1986.

The actress who has won the greatest number of Goya awards for the «best leading female performance» is Carmen Maura, with three awards, followed by Verónica Forqué, Cecilia Roth, Penélope Cruz, Lola Dueñas, Maribel Verdú and Emma Suárez with two.

Victoria Abril holds the record for the most consecutive nominations in any acting category, with 6 (from 1986 to 1991, all as the lead), although she did not win the award on any of those occasions. She got it in 1995 with her seventh nomination for No one will talk about us when we're dead.

Penelope Cruz is the actress with the highest number of nominations for the «best leading female performance», with twelve nominations, followed by Victoria Abril and Maribel Verdú with eight each. Victoria Abril only got it once, in 1995, while Penélope Cruz has won the award twice: the first in 1998 thanks to her portrayal of Macarena Granada in La niña de tus ojos, and the second in 2006, for her portrayal of Raimunda in Volver, a role for which she also earned her first Oscar nomination. Maribel Verdú also won it on two occasions, for Siete mesas de billiards francés and Snow White. Penélope Cruz is also the actress with the most nominations counting all acting categories, with fourteen, followed by Maribel Verdú with eleven.

The actresses who have won the Goya award for "best leading female performance" and "best supporting female performance" are: Verónica Forqué, Candela Peña, Carmen Maura, Penélope Cruz, Laia Marull, Emma Suárez, Nathalie Poza and Nora Navas. The only performers who have won both awards in the same edition have been Verónica Forqué (in the second edition of 1987, for La vida alegre and Moros y cristianos, respectively) and Emma Suárez (in the XXXI edition of 2016, for Julieta and La próxima piel respectively).

The only two actresses who have managed to win the "Goya for Best Leading Female Performance" after having previously won the "Goya for Best New Actress" are Laia Marull (Best New Actress in 2000 and Best Leading Actress in 2003), and Natalia de Molina (best new actress in 2013 and best leading actress in 2015). Marull is also the only performer who has won Goya awards for "best lead performance", "best supporting performance" and "best newcomer": she won the award for best newcomer in 2000 for Fugitivas, the award for the best leading female performance in 2003 for Te doy mis ojos, and the award for the best supporting female performance in 2010 for Pa negre.

The only sisters candidates for the Goya award for the «best leading female performance» are Irene Gutiérrez Caba (in the second edition of 1987) and Julia Gutiérrez Caba (in the twelfth edition of 1997), although neither won the award.

Six actresses have been nominated despite not speaking Spanish and having to be dubbed in their films: Nicole Kidman, Sarah Polley, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Juliette Binoche and Emily Mortimer.

In the 9th edition of the 1994 Goya Awards, Ruth Gabriel was nominated for the "best leading role" for the same role and for the "best revelation" for the film Días contados.
