The Goya Awards were created by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 1986.

The following list shows the list of all the winners of the Goya Award for Best Director since the first edition of 1986.

The Academy also awards the Goya Award to the best new director since the creation of this award in the fourth edition of 1989.

The film director who has won the most Goya awards for "best director" is Pedro Almodóvar, with 3 awards; followed by Alejandro Amenábar, Fernando León de Aranoa, Juan Antonio Bayona and Fernando Trueba, with 2 awards each.

The directors who have won the award for "best new director" and "best director" are, in temporal order, Fernando León de Aranoa (1997, 1998 and 2002), Alejandro Amenábar (1996, 2001 and 2004) and Juan Antonio Bayona (2007, 2012 and 2016).

The only director brothers who have won the Goya Award for "best direction" are Fernando Trueba (1989 and 1992) and David Trueba (2013).

The director who has won the Goya award for “best film” the most times is Pedro Almodóvar, with 4 awards; They are followed by Alejandro Amenábar and Fernando Trueba, with 3 awards each. No other director has won 2 “best film” awards.

The new directors who have won the award for “best film” with their first film are Agustín Díaz Yanes (for Nobody will talk about us when we have died, 1995), Alejandro Amenábar (for Tesis, 1996), Achero Mañas (for El Bola, 2000) and Raúl Arévalo (for Afternoon for Wrath, 2016). The four also won the "best new director" award.
