The following periodic table indicates the electronic configuration of the chemical elements. Chemical elements that have electronic configurations other than those expected based on the orbital filling rules have been highlighted (in bold). For each element, only the electronic configuration of the last level is indicated.

Elements 1 to 118

The following are the electronic configurations of neutral gaseous atoms in their ground states. For each atom, the subshells are given concisely first, then with all subshells written out, followed by the number of electrons per shell. The electron configurations of elements beyond hasium (element 108) have never been measured; therefore the predictions are used.

As a rough rule of thumb, electron configurations are given by Aufbau's principle and Madelung's rule. However, there are numerous exceptions; for example, the slightest exception is chrome, which is predicted to have the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d4 4s2, written as [Ar] 3d4 4s2, but whose actual configuration given in the following table is [Ar] 3d5 4s1.

Note that these electron configurations are given for neutral atoms in the gas phase, which are not the same as the electron configurations for the same atoms in chemical environments. In many cases, the multiple configurations lie within a small range of energies, and the irregularities shown below do not necessarily have a clear relationship to chemical behavior. For the undiscovered eighth-row elements, mixing is expected of configurations is very important and sometimes the result can no longer be described well with a single configuration.

The following are the expected electron configurations of elements 119-173 and 184. The symbol [Og] indicates the likely electron configuration of oganeson (Z = 118), which is currently the last known element. The element configurations in this table are written starting with [Og] because the oganeson is expected to be the last element above with a closed shell (inert gas) configuration, 1s2 2s 2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 4f14 5s2 5p6 5d10 5f14 6s2 6p6 6d10 7s2 7p 6. Similarly, the [172] in the configurations of elements 173 and 184 indicates the probable closed shell configuration of element 172.

Beyond element 123, no full calculations are available and therefore the data in this table should be taken as tentative. For element 123 and perhaps the other heavier elements as well, it is anticipated Several possible electronic configurations have very similar energy levels, so it is very difficult to predict the ground state. All configurations that have been proposed are included, as it is theorized that Madelung's rule will probably break here.

Predicted block assignments up to 172 are from Kulsha (2016), following the expected available valence orbitals. However, there is no consensus in the literature on how blocks after element 138 would work.
