The basketball competition at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games took place in two venues: for the preliminary rounds, the Helliniko Olympic Arena of the Helliniko Olympic Complex, and for the final rounds, the OACA Olympic Indoor Hall of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex.

This was the 16th edition of the official Olympic tournament for this sport since its debut at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Both the men's and women's tournaments featured 12 participating teams, divided into two groups of six, where they played a system of all-against-all. The best four of each group went to a direct elimination system until reaching the final. The winners of each semifinal met to determine the gold and silver medals, while the losers contested a defining match for the bronze medal.
