Britain's Linford Christie won the men's 100m in 9.96 s. At 32, he was the oldest athlete to win gold in this event. In the women's 100 meters, American Gail Devers, who had overcome a serious illness only a few months earlier, prevailed, while the great favorite Merlene Ottey could only take bronze.
American Carl Lewis won two gold medals, in the long jump and the 4×100 meter relay. In the long jump he beat his compatriot and world record holder Mike Powell, in one of the most anticipated duels of the Games.

The women's 10,000 meter event was very exciting, with Ethiopia's Derartu Tulu and South Africa's Elana Meyer battling for victory. The embrace between the two and the lap of honor that they took together was the moment that best symbolized the end of apartheid.
