Annex: Athletics at the 2004 Athens Olympics
The athletics at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games took place at the Athens Olympic Stadium, inaugurated shortly before the Games and with a capacity for 75,000 spectators. The competitions were held between August 18 and 29, 2004.
The shot put events did not take place inside the stadium, but in the ancient stadium of Olympia, in the Peloponnese, 365 km from Athens.
The marathon events, both male and female, were held on a route of historical reminiscences, starting in the town of Marathon and finishing in the old Panathinaiko Stadium, site of the first Olympic Games of the Modern Era in 1896.
By nations, the United States had the most wins with nine (seven in men and two in women). For its part, Russia added six wins, five of them in the female category. Three victories were achieved by Great Britain and Sweden, and with two were China, Cuba, Ethiopia, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Japan and Morocco.
