Annamocarya sinensis

Annamocarya is a monotypic genus of trees in the family Juglandaceae. Its only species, Annamocarya sinensis, is native to southwestern China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan) and northern Vietnam. It is related to Carya, and was included in the same genus of the same name as Carya sinensis, but shared certain characters with Juglans.

Description

It is a medium to large evergreen tree up to 30 m tall. The leaves are 3-5 dm long, pinnate with 7-11 leaflets that have entire margins, distinguished from Carya by having serrated edges. The flowers have catkins produced in spring, with the male catkins in clusters of 5-8 together (single in Carya). The fruit is a nut 6 to 8 cm long. and 4–6 cm broad, with a prominent sharp bill at one end.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier and published in Revue de Botanique Appliquée et d'Agriculture Tropicale, 21, p. 504 in the year 1941.
