The flag of Angola is divided horizontally into two halves, a red upper stripe and a black lower part. The red color symbolizes the blood spilled by the people during the struggle for independence and the black symbolizes the African continent. The symbol of the center, in yellow, is made up of an interlocked gear with a machete and a star. The gear stands for industrial workers, the machete for farmers, and the star for progress and international solidarity.

Based on the flag of the Movimiento Popular de Liberación de Angola (MPLA), the symbols are reminiscent of the hammer and sickle on the Soviet flag.

New proposed flag

In 2003 a new national flag was proposed for Angola. On August 28 of that year it was approved by the Constitutional Commission. However, there is a popular movement against this flag, which can only be made official when a Constituent Assembly is established.
