Angélica María Hartman Ortiz was born on September 27, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, the daughter of American Arnold Frederic Hartman, and Mexican Angélica de Jesús Ortiz Sandoval. From a very young age she was close to the artistic world thanks to her father, who was a musician from the American Union. Her parents separated from her when she was just five years old, and her mother kept custody of her, to later take her to live in Mexico City. Yolanda Ortiz, her mother's sister, took her niece to a party where they met producer Gregorio Wallerstein, who told them that he was looking for a boy for her next film. Little Angélica María raised her hair and asked that it be cut, a fact that amused the producer, who invited her to participate in the audition for the film, which finally won the role in the film Sin.[citation required]
