Andrew "Tridge" Tridgell (28 February 1967 -) is an Australian programmer, based in Canberra.

Born in Sydney, Andrew is the original author of the Samba file server (on which he continues to collaborate), and co-inventor of the rsync algorithm. He is known for his analysis of proprietary protocols and algorithms, in order to make free implementations compatible with them.

Academic Milestones

Tridgell completed a PhD at the Australian National University's Computer Science Laboratory. Her original PhD work was in the area of speech recognition, but it was never completed. Her thesis presented & # 34; Efficient algorithms to order and synchronize & # 34; it was based on her work on the rsync algorithm.

Awards and distinctions

In October 2003, Tridgell was deemed by The Bulletin magazine to be the smartest person in information and communications technology in Australia.

In July 2008, Tridgell was named "Best Interoperator" at the Google Open Source Awards – O'Reilly, for his work on Samba and Rsync.

Tridgell (along with Jeremy Allison and Volker Lendecke) has been called "guru in its traditional Indian meaning" by IT writer, Sam Varghese.

On December 11, 2018, Tridgell was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Australian National University, for authoring Samba, co-inventing rsync; and contributions to free and open source software.
