The district of Ancón is one of the forty-three districts that make up the province of Lima, located in the department of the same name, in Peru. It limits to the north, with the district of Aucallama, province of Huaral; to the northeast, with the district of Huamantanga, province of Canta; to the east, with the district of Carabayllo; to the south, with the district of Puente Piedra and the district of Ventanilla, constitutional province of Callao; to the southwest, with the district of Santa Rosa; and to the west, with the Pacific Ocean.

It is located 43 km north of downtown Lima and is a historic spa. Within the ecclesiastical division of the Catholic Church of Peru, it belongs to the Diocese of Carabayllo.

Etymology

Basically the word Ancón means cove, it also comes from the old name of the fishing village of the port of Lancón. It is the capital and only urban center of the homonymous district of the province of Lima, the most northerly and extensive of the same.

History

Port of Ancon.

Ancón was created as a fishing village 4000 years ago by the Ancón-Supe indigenous civilization, one of the oldest on the Peruvian coast. During the Hispanic colony, the place was known as "Pueblo de Pescadores de Lancón". Its peaceful waters are appealing to those who like adventure sports and sailing.

It treasures the most important archaeological remains of the Peruvian coast, known as the archaeological complex of Ancón. In the year 1870, the first tombs of a large necropolis were discovered when excavation work was being carried out for the construction of the railway to Huacho, he continued with the excavations and studies. The conclusions were that in the area there were remains from three well-defined periods. A very old one with Chavín de Huántar influence, an intermediate one with elements of the Huaura Culture, and a recent one dominated by the Chancay and Inca cultures.

In 1959, the archaeologist Jorge C. Muelle found pre-ceramic remains under the Chavinoid layers and traced back the prehistory of Ancón to several thousand years BC. c.

The bay of Ancón has been used as a natural port on several occasions. One of them was during the War of the Pacific, a warlike conflict that Peru and Bolivia had with Chile in the period 1879-1883. Even there, the historic treaty that ended that dispute was signed on October 20, 1883. Since 2005, the district of Ancón has been the headquarters of the Piedras Gordas prison, the most modern in Peru.

This historical background added to the multiculturalism of its population today (basically emigrants from the north and east of Peru) motivates controversies in the installation of Investment Megaprojects who allege mistreatment of the ecology of the bay, and others that support the need to obtain these investments, such as what happened with the Company Santa Sofía Puertos S.A. in its intention to build a Port Terminal.

A unique precedent in the history of Ancón is the popular consultation submitted to the previous mayor, Guillermo Pozo García, deciding his revocation on November 30, 2009. Also on October 3, 2010, John Barrera Bernui was elected by majority vote as the new burgomaster, who today (2012) would see intentions of the previous burgomaster Pozo in promoting his revocation.

Attractions of Ancón

Obelisco Casa de Ancón.
Neighborhood of Ancon.

This is an old spa that is connected to Cercado de Lima by the North Pan-American Highway. Its sea is especially calm and there are practically no waves in the part of the dock, which makes it easier for pleasure boats to stay both at sea and at the Yacht Club Ancón dock.

To the north of Ancón are the beaches of Miramar, Las Conchitas, Las Pocitas and Rocabeach; Playa Las Conchitas considered a hotbed for surfers that has been inhabited for more than 60 years by families that were relocated from Playa Hermosa by the Municipality and the Peruvian Navy, Las Pocitas, which houses student centers and boarding schools, and Rocabeach rock beach. frequented by local surfers.

In its great boardwalk, modern buildings mix with mansions from the XIX century and the beginning of the XX. Until the 1970s, Ancón was the most exclusive beach resort in Lima. After a period of crisis until the 1990s, today the bay of Ancón is being remodeled and is once again attracting wealthy people from Lima.

Site Museum

The Museum of Site and Cultural Activities of Ancón exhibits ceramic pieces, textiles and funerary bundles found during more than a century of excavations carried out in the various archaeological sites located in the area, some dioramas and infographics illustrate the visitor on the way of life of the ancient inhabitants of Ancón. The person in charge of the Museum is Mr. Justo Cáceres.

Island Ancon

Located in front of Punta Mulatos, a coastal accident located at the southern end of the bay of Ancón. This arch of islands and promontories are a total of 10. They are located in the extreme south closest to the coast.

Although the entire complex is called the Fishermen's Group, it is made up of the following blocks: El Solitario, made up of the islets La Viuda, Two Sisters, Kickstand, Bad Name and Wolves; Las Huacas, two miles to the west of the previous set, is comprised of two medium-sized islets and three small ones; Islas Grandes, two and a half miles to the west of the last group, is made up of the islands: Gallinazo, Grande and Torbadero.

Each of these islands and islets are the temporary or permanent habitat of seabirds: Peruvian gull (Larus belcheri), guanay (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii), chuita (Phalacrocorax gaimardi), tendril (Larosterna inca), camanay (Sula nebouxii), booby (Sula variegata), pelican (Pelecanus occidenthalis), and marine mammals such as the dark-haired sea lion (Otaria bironya), which are mainly concentrated on the island known as Pescadores. The average population of wolves is 50 specimens.

The best season to visit these islands are the months from September to March. It is the time when the birds that inhabit the islands stop migrating and bathe and fish in the surroundings of the islets. It is a show that has no equal.

The boat in which the tour takes place covers 15 miles of sea from the port, which is 200 meters from the main square.

Nautical activities

The bay is characterized by having a very calm sea on the south side of the bay and mild to moderate waves on the north end of it, which allows the practice of a wide variety of water sports and yachting and recreational sailboats.

On the southern side of the bay, especially near Playa Hermosa and San Francisco Bay, the wind usually blows during spring and the first half of summer with a pleasant intensity for navigation (between 10 and 20 knots), which allows the practice of sailing sports such as Windsurfing, Optimist, Sunfish, Laser, J-24, catamarans and sailboats of different sizes. However, since the winds blow from land towards the sea, it is recommended for beginners only under the supervision of an experienced instructor or sailor.

A sample of the good wind conditions in the bay was shown during the World Windsurfing Championship, modality Formula Experience and Formula Windsurfing, held the days before the year new from 2008, an event in which the Peruvian Nicolás Schreier achieved the title of World Champion in the senior category, followed by the Peruvian Ricardo Guglielmino Pedreros.

Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Surfing are also practiced in front of Playa Hermosa in the morning.

And towards the north side of the bay are the beaches with waves that are frequented by local surfers. Among the best known are Las Conchitas, and about 300 m to the north a wave that surfers call Roka Beach. Both beaches break better with waves from the west or north, since the floods from the south do not easily enter the bay.
