Anastasius I was the 39th Pope of the Catholic Church between 399 and 401.

Pontiff consecrated as such at approximately 70 years of age, famous for his life in austerity and poverty.

Recognized friend of Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome.

He condemned Origen for some of the exaggerations made in his biblical commentaries.

He also wrote several letters to the churches in Africa against the Donatist schism.

He was succeeded in the papacy by Innocent I.

Anastasius died on December 19, 401.

His death was commemorated on April 27 until 1922, when it was moved to its correct date.
