Shortly after the triumph of the revolution, he moved to France and later established his residence between the United States and Guatemala.

In 1983, he married the Salvadoran Marisa Celasco with whom he had 3 children.

In 2000 he announced his intentions to return to Nicaragua. Currently Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero continues to live in exile and has not insisted on his visit to Nicaragua.

At the beginning of 2008 he made statements to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa that created controversy and awakened old passions, with many repudiating him and others supporting him. A reporter from the newspaper traveled to Guatemala to obtain an interview with Somoza Portocarrero, which was published in the newspaper in a series. They were his first public statements practically since the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution that overthrew his father.

None of the Somoza Portocarrero brothers reside in Nicaragua, unlike other family members who have returned.
