Anal sex
Anal sex is a sexual practice that consists of inserting the penis (or a sex toy in the case of anal masturbation) into the partner's anus or rectum. Other synonymous terms are "sodomy," "anal intercourse," and "pedication." In addition to humans, this practice is known to exist among primates and other mammals.
Many people find anal sex pleasurable, and some are able to reach orgasm through anal, G-spot, and clitoral stimulation for women, as well as prostate stimulation for men. However, many people consider it painful, sometimes extremely painful, which in some cases may be psychosomatic in origin.
It is also possible for a woman to anally penetrate a man or another woman by means of a prosthesis, which is commonly attached to her pubis by means of a harness. This variant of anal sex is called pegging. In a broader approach, anal sexuality encompasses various forms of stimulation, from anal masturbation with fingers to oral-anal sex, also known as anilingus.[citation needed]
Anal sex in history
In ancient Greece, the sexual practice was known, the man taking his sexual partner from behind, having to adopt a submissive position. Its practice was so widespread that it has even survived to this day under the name of "Greek",[citation needed] making direct reference to anal sex, although the coitus a tergo can be both anal and vaginal in the case of heterosexual couples.
Although in Rome it was not allowed —and therefore not acceptable— for a Roman citizen to have anal sex (poedicare) with another Roman citizen, there was no impediment if he did so with a male or female slave. Horace (65-8 BC), lyric poet and master satire, echoes this ubiquitous situation:
When she crotches her, and you have a slave and a slave on hand, who do you jump on right away? You won't prefer to get dressed, will you? - Of course not. I like easy and affordable sex.Sátiras 1.2.114-9
Anal sex has been considered taboo in many Western countries since the Middle Ages when male members of heretical movements were rumored to be practicing it on each other.
During the Middle Ages, most Christian clergy were not entirely celibate, but the highest orders of some heretical creeds were, leading to rumors of their same-sex attraction. Some medieval wooden altarpieces and drolleries portray people performing anilinguo with a half-goat, half-man demon.
This practice has been condemned in the last two thousand years by most religions: both for being infertile (it is one of the most typical natural practices for birth control, as a substitute for vaginal intercourse), and because they carry serious hygienic risks. Even in 2007, pedication is considered a crime in certain states of the United States of America, even within legally constituted marriages.
Prevalence
Currently, anal sex is considered one of the most widespread sexual practices in homosexual and heterosexual couples. Various studies reveal that, today, women and men confess to enjoying anal sex. Approximately 40% of heterosexual couples have tried it at least once and, depending on one study or another, between 10 and 20% of couples practice it regularly. Even in some Latin American countries the practice is carried out by 20% of women and 24% of men, being the most common practice after vaginal and oral sex.
Anal sex in culture
Anal sex in literature
In addition to the Marquis de Sade, many authors such as Bocaccio, Chaucer, Petronio or Rabelais have described this type of practice in their works. Authors of the 20th century who have introduced scenes of anal sex into their writings include Guillaume Apollinaire and Pierre Louys. In Spanish, Eso no by Marcelo Birmajer is a collection of stories all focused on anal sex, fundamentally heterosexual.
Anal sex in the cinema
It is considered that the first anal intercourse in conventional cinema was carried out by Gunnel Lindblöm, who showed that it was possible to have intercourse in a place other than the bedroom with the light turned off and through a route other than the vagina. The anal intercourse filmed in the film El silencio (1963) by Ingmar Bergman takes place in the seats of a half-empty cinema.
You could also indicate Querelle by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1982).
Other titles in which anal sex is practiced are:
- The last tango in Paris (the famous butter scene between Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider)
- Number Deux
- The Midnight Express
- Basic Instinct (with the characters of Michael Douglas and Jeanne Tripplehorn);
- Isi/Disi. Love of the beast
- Irreversible (a scene of rape with the characters played by Jo Prestia and Monica Bellucci);
- The good star;
- Now " Later "
- The Crystal House
- Pulp FictionDirector Quentin Tarantino, at the scene of the police and Marsellus Wallace;
- Unfaithful, starring Richard Gere, Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez.
- Brokeback Mountain, directed by Ang Lee, presenting the anal sex both man-man and man-woman.
- Calm down. (with the characters of Nanni Moretti and Isabella Ferrari);
- Nymphomaniac (with the characters of Shia LaBeouf and Stacy Martin)
- Fifty Grey Shadows in a scene (with the characters of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson)
- Loev
As for porn movies, scenes that contain anal sex have become ubiquitous, being a highly demanded practice. In these scenes it is common that, on occasions, the buttocks and anus of the penetrated person are shaved or depilated, as well as the testicles and pubis of the person penetrated, for a better visualization of penetration. The French director and actor Pierre Woodman always includes anal sex in his videos.
Related terms
The taboo nature of this practice has led to the appearance of alternative words, with different uses, to identify and, where appropriate, despise its performance by homosexuals. Such is the case of the word "sodomize", used to soften the Greek meaning or, on the contrary, to pejoratively emphasize the fact, as it is a taboo break.
The origin of the term «sodomy» comes from Sodom, a city of Canaan that —according to chapter 19 of the book of Genesis, in the Bible— the God Yahveh destroyed by means of a rain of fire to punish her for sin (despite the fact that the vulgar believe that it was the practice of homosexuality - the same one that they wanted to carry out by force with some visitors, who in the end turned out to be angels sent by Yahweh, who went to warn Lot of the impending cataclysm). From his adjective "sodomite" comes the word, now synonymous, homosexual.
In late Renaissance Italy, the painter Giovanni Antonio Bazzi was called "Il Sodoma" ("the sodomite" or homosexual).
The term bujarrón (used only in Spain) and the Lunfardo terms “bufarrón” and “bufa” (used in Uruguay and Argentina) originate in medieval Europe as an insult used to describe the alleged homosexual practices of heretics in the Neo-Manichean sect of the Bulgarian Bogomils.[citation needed]
The desire for anal sex and its stimulation
Independently of the call to desire that being able to break a taboo can cause, there are anthropological reasons why the sight of a butt provokes sexual desire.
Ernst Gräfenberg, the German researcher who discovered the G-spot and gave it its name, believed that the ideal position to stimulate this area -and obtain the maximum arousal- was penetration from behind, as all quadrupeds do. Many scholars continued to view the face-to-face posture as uniquely human and therefore "unnatural," but research with bonobos has revealed that they too practice face-to-face penetration and that females also have their clitoris outside the vagina.
The sexual behavior of the bonobos, who practice kissing with their tongues, penetration from the front and from behind, fellatio, cunnilingus, rubbing, masturbation and various touching (and all this regardless of the sex of the other bonobo, that is, whether between males, between females, alone, accompanied or in a group), would reveal that the nature of these practices might not be linked to culture, but to the nature of the species.
Regardless of the fact that penetration occurs, the sight of an anus, its caress and especially the contact of the penis with one can easily cause an erection. Human buttocks are in fact proportionally larger than those of other primates. Partly because of bipedalism, but according to some scholars, also to promote sexual attraction.
Since the evolutionary value of sex is fundamentally reproductive, this would explain the relatively larger size of the female buttocks. The social utility of sex —as occurs in bonobos— would explain the desire to penetrate individuals of the same sex.
Likewise, the buttocks are very sensitive and, if the experience of caresses stimulates sexual desire, in some sexual intercourse positions, logically, rhythmic contact with the buttocks is also produced, which is a strong sexual stimulus for both parts.
Regarding which is the morphology of the buttocks that is considered most desirable, this has varied with the culture: in some times they were preferred prominent and nowadays it is valued that they are visible, but at the same time firm and harmonious.
Safe anal sex and hygiene
Risks of Anal Sex
The rectal mucosa is fragile and sensitive to infection by viruses and bacteria. The mucosa absorbs the substances deposited in the rectum, a phenomenon used for the administration of medicines, as is the case with suppositories. This absorption capacity can be inadvertently increased by brutal penetration, which can cause small micro-wounds and even cause bleeding. Therefore, it is a propitious ground for the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs, formerly called "sexually transmitted diseases" or STDs), whether they are viral such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), human papilloma (HPV), all types of hepatitis (with the exception of hepatitis A), genital herpes and other famous ones, but with a bacterial cause such as gonorrhea, syphilis and others, even in the if there is no ejaculation.
On the other hand, a rectal prolapse can occur if the necessary safety measures are not taken.
Hygiene
Consequently always the practice of anal sex using a condom is advised (pedication without a condom is also very risky for the "active" lover).
If the practice of pedication or anal sex is carried out without a condom, in any case it is —even if it seems obvious— essential to maintain the highest level of hygiene of the anus and rectum, as well as of the penis in the moment of penetration.
Hygiene is important for good anal health and for anal sex, and even more so if it is done without a condom.
Normal care facilitates a natural hydration that allows the surrounding skin to be soft and elastic.
Lubrication
Unlike the vulva and vagina, the anus and rectum do not secrete natural lubrication that facilitates sexual intercourse. These muscles normally have an elasticity that allows them to stretch naturally. Even so, this can cause anal tears and fissures which may require re-lubrication.
For this reason, when anal sex is practiced, some lubricant is usually used to facilitate penetration. As for natural lubricants, the use of saliva or anal penetration after vaginal penetration are very frequent. But since both liquids evaporate quickly, penetration would have to be immediate. Even so, they do not usually offer a great guarantee.
The application of the lubricant must entail its morbidity and its part of sensory excitation.
Relaxation of the anal muscle and dilation of the sphincter
Since the muscle of the anus (anal sphincter) is normally closed, anal sex could be painful if care is not taken to stretch this muscle beforehand.

Pleasure in the penetration phase
The abundance of nerve endings in the anal region and rectum can make anal sex pleasurable for men or women. The internal and external sphincter muscles control the opening and closing of the anus; these muscles, which are sensitive membranes made up of many nerve endings, facilitate pleasure or pain during anal sex. In Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia it is stated that "the innermost third of the anal canal is less sensitive to touch than the outer two-thirds, but more sensitive to pressure" and that "the rectum is a curved tube about eight or nine inches long and has the capacity, like the anus, to expand".
In the event that anal intercourse or pedication is practiced with a woman, she obtains her pleasure to a great extent from the uterus being stimulated, which is frequently little stimulated in vaginal intercourse.[ citation needed] The G-spot is an area of female anatomy that is particularly debated among doctors and researchers, but is typically considered to lie behind the pelvic bone surrounding the urethra and is accessible through the anterior wall of the vagina; this and other areas of the vagina are considered to have tissue and nerves related to the clitoris. Direct stimulation of the clitoris, a G-spot area, or both can help some women enjoy anal sex and achieve orgasm in some cases during this.
Being anally penetrated can give a man a pleasurable sensation as the penis rubs against the prostate through the wall of the rectum. This can result in pleasurable sensations and lead to orgasm in some cases. Stimulation of the prostate can produce a deeper orgasm, sometimes described by men as longer and more intense, longer lasting, and allowing for more ecstatic feelings than an orgasm achieved through penile stimulation alone. The prostate it is located in front of the rectum and is the larger and more developed male counterpart of Skene's glands. It is also typical for the male, when he is the recipient, not to orgasm from anal sex alone.
Anal penetration generally requires choosing an appropriate angle, as the anus is tighter and less flexible than the vagina.
Usually the penetrated person complements anal intercourse with masturbation, which contributes to a multiplication of pleasure and to relax the anal muscles, with the consequent facilitation and improvement of anal penetration. At the moment in which the "passive" partner (the person penetrated) achieves orgasm, they strongly contract the anal muscles, causing strong pressure on the "active" partner, which makes it easier for them to orgasm.
The pleasure procured by anal intercourse derives not only from physical sensations, but also from subjective ones ("breaking a taboo", for example) and, according to psychoanalysis, also from a reminiscence of the anal phase or state.
However, both women and men are often conditioned from childhood to regard anal intercourse as "negative", so a compulsive attempt to engage them in anal intercourse can be perceived as a kind of rape. It is also due to the risks of weakening or tearing of the perianal musculature or the walls of the rectum. From this it is understood that both anal intercourse and any type of sexual relationship will be carried out prior agreement with the couple, with the greatest possible communication.
Research results in the anal heterosexual sex study, [8/2010 (n=214)] female participants indicated that stimulation of multiple erogenous zones simultaneously (the clitoris, G-spot, anus, and other erogenous zones) allowed women to enjoy anal penetration with less discomfort compared to anal penetration alone.
Anal masturbation
Anal masturbation is manual or object stimulation in the anal area. The most common methods for anal masturbation include the insertion of one or more fingers, some type of sex toy, and even non-specific items. Of all of them, the most common system is usually the use of the fingers. Some people enjoy the sensation of a finger—their own or their partner's—inserted into the anal orifice and gently rotated.
The most common techniques include touching the anal orifice while masturbating or manipulating one's own or partner's genitals; or stimulate your partner's anus during intercourse, or the oral-genital method. In other words, anal masturbation is usually accompanied by genital stimulation, with the purpose of increasing arousal and even causing orgasm.
Although less frequent, the same multiple stimulation can be obtained in group sex with the help of a third person, commonly by using one or two fingers in the anus of the man or woman while penetrating, or through oral sex and even with the practice of a double vaginal-anal penetration.
Anal masturbation can be applied to men and women of any sexual orientation, since the anus contains numerous nerve endings that can be stimulated. These nerve endings largely follow the same anatomical pathway as those of the clitoris. In men, anal masturbation is especially pleasurable, since in front of the rectum is the prostate, which also contains nerve endings. There are also some sex toys on the market whose objective is the stimulation of the prostate. In women, inserting an object into the anus can directly stimulate the vagina. Anal stimulation can, in both men and women, significantly intensify orgasm.
The use of enemas, for hygienic reasons, is usually the previous step to anal masturbation, but it can also be a form of masturbation in itself: it is what is known as clismaphilia. However, it must be taken into account that the abuse of enemas can frequently lead to a physical dependency for the proper functioning of the intestine.
Most frequent positions for anal sex
Just as lubrication and relaxation of the sphincter are essential to initiate good anal sex, it is convenient to choose an appropriate position. It is important that the person being penetrated chooses the position that can facilitate a smoother penetration. There are many positions. Some of the most frequent are listed below.
Back swinging
In back swinging the person receiving is lying face down and the person penetrating is on top. Penetration is shallower, but the rhythm is controlled by the person penetrating, which, together with the strong pressure exerted by the anus on the glans, can cause an intense orgasm.
Doggy style or coitus a tergo
It is one of the best known. The person to be penetrated leans on his knees and arms in a high position (usually on a bed). The more she bends her back, the more her anus is exposed. The person who penetrates can also be kneeling on the bed, or standing outside of it. In either of those two cases, it is the "asset" who is in control and the rhythm of the penetration, although the "passive" he can play with her partner's testicles. In this position, the anus of the penetrated person tends to narrow, so penetration can become painful. Unlike vaginal penetration, the so-called "doggy style" o doggy generally requires the penis to be in a higher position.
Anal intercourse with the penetrated person sitting on top of his partner's penis
Either facing the partner or from behind, in this second case the visual stimulation comes from observing the penetrated rear end while the advantage of doing it facing the other person is to see the other person's expression, to be able to kiss her on the lips, cheeks, neck, touching and smelling her hair and, if she is a woman, how her breasts look and move; In addition, they rub against the human body. The penetration that it allows is very deep and the advantage it has is that the penetrated person has control of the movements, with which he can regulate both the rhythm and the depth of the penetration. It is usually a slightly painful position, so sometimes it can be interesting to start with it to adapt the muscles of the rectum to the size of the penis.
With the two people lying on their sides
In this case, the depth of penetration is much less and there is a risk that the penis of the penetrating man "escapes" several times from his partner's rectum. Instead, it is a very sensitive position and with a lot of physical contact between the two involved. It also allows the person who penetrates to play with his partner's genitals.
Other related practices
- Fisting or Fist fucking: consists of the introduction of a fist, and even the arm, within the anus and rectum of the person penetrated. It is a practice very prone to annal tears, fissures and breakages. Therefore, the expansion phase can last hours. On the other hand, this practice significantly increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections, as bleeding is frequent.
- Clismafilia: sexual pleasure obtained when injecting fluid into the anal cavity; this practice includes the use of enemas.
- Andromimetofilia and ginemimetophilia: a woman represents and behaves sexually as a man and the man adopts the role of the woman. In anal penetration, the "passive" subject will be the man and the "active" woman.
- Double penetration: Double penetration is a sexual practice that consists of two people penetrating simultaneously to a third; one of the people penetrating the vaginal hole and the other penetrating the anus or both penetrating the same hole at the same time: the anus or the vagina.
- Simultaneous: it is that both people get anal at the same time, or that a person is penetrating and being anally penetrated.
- Self-penetration: It is that a person penetrates himself alone, few can do it and some achieve orgasm.
