Amado Carrillo Fuentes (Navolato, Sinaloa; December 17, 1956-Mexico City; July 4, 1997), better known as The Lord of the Skies Due to the fleet of aircraft he had - among which there were several Boeing 727s that he used to transport drugs and have a fortune of billions of dollars - he was a Mexican drug trafficker who became leader of the Juárez Cartel after Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo was arrested. Partner of Pablo Escobar, Carrillo used his fleet of Boeing 727 aircraft to transport drugs. He died in a Mexico City hospital after undergoing extensive plastic surgery to change his appearance. In his last days he was extensively searched by the authorities of Argentina, Colombia, the United States of America and especially the authorities of Mexico.

Juárez Cartel

Before the death of the famous Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, Amado Carrillo controlled the Juárez Cartel. Escobar produced the cocaine and Amado Carrillo bought and distributed it throughout North America. He was known as The King of White Gold, and during his time as supreme leader the Juárez Cartel was the most powerful among the four cartels that then operated in Mexico: the Juárez, the Gulf, the of Sinaloa and that of Tijuana.

After the death of Pablo Escobar, supreme boss of the Medellín Cartel, Amado Carrillo positioned himself as the main supplier of cocaine in the world and surpassed Pablo Escobar in power, controlling the “Business” from A to Zeta, from production to distribution. The Lord of the Skies, unlike Pablo Escobar, was very discreet, because he learned, watching Escobar's life, that it was not good to appear on the news. During the time he dominated the “Business,” very few journalists dared to write anything about him. According to the DEA, the Juárez Cartel earned 200 to 300 million dollars per week, and 1% of that money was for bribes.

Two months before Amado Carrillo died, he had lost his main operator, General José de Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo; This soldier had a reputation for being unwavering, tough and forceful, and after leading many arrests of retail traffickers, he was named the head of the fight against drugs in Mexico. The United States supported the military man, but a few months later it was discovered that he was in cahoots with Carrillo.

Under the mandate of Rebollo, who for a long time was protected by the DEA, and with the support of Carrillo, Mexico little by little replaced the Colombian cartels in the supply of cocaine to the United States. Meanwhile, political and social corruption was deepening in all areas, even among the nationalist military sectors that were more reticent about alliances with the Americans. The incredible geopolitical advantages achieved by the United States when the "narcogeneral" Rebollo tends to think that there was significant participation by the DEA and the CIA in the entire process.

Flight to Chile

After the fall of military commander José de Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo, the United States government pressured Mexico to arrest Carrillo. The DEA offered a reward, and Amado Carrillo fled to Chile, where he entered under the false name of Jorge Torres or Jorge Venegas. The passport photo was real, but no one linked it to the character thanks to the care with which the drug trafficker hid his identity, with which during the time he was in Chile he bought desirable plots of land in the commune of La Calera. It is said that he had three children in Chile, with different women. Today, only one daughter named Carolina is known. From Chile it travels to Buenos Aires and then to Montevideo, where it creates an entrance to enter synthetic drugs imported from Europe and distribute them throughout the continent. This trafficking continues to be active to this day and is verifiable by the small seizures made by the Uruguayan police from time to time.

In Chile he seeks to invest, where he is advised by lawyer Héctor Novoa Vázquez, brother of Jovino Novoa Vásquez, who after that was subjected to proceedings for these links with the Juárez cartel. He laundered money in the Central Bank of that time with an amount of more than US$1,000,000.

Death

In 1997, Amado Carrillo traveled to Mexico to undergo cosmetic surgery that ultimately could not be carried out, so a group of plastic surgeons led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Orozco was selected, who operated on him in a private hospital. from Mexico. Carrillo underwent surgery for more than eight hours, but in the early hours of July 4 he woke up with pain and they applied a sedative, Dormicum (substance: Midazolam), which supposedly caused his death. He left behind 28 recognized children and countless widowed women. It is believed that Amado Carrillo's death was not an accident but was planned by members of another cartel. The police have strong suspicions that it could have been a murder. Just as there are suspicions that he is still alive. The doctors in charge of operating on Amado Carrillo were murdered four months later.

The Ciudad Juárez Cartel, the largest criminal organization in America, was directed by a council formed by two of Amado Carrillo's brothers, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes el Viceroy and Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes the Golden Child. El Señor de los Cielos' compadre, Ismael "el Mayo" Zambada, and Joaquín Guzmán Loera "el Chapo Guzmán" Guzmán agreed to call it "the Golden Triangle alliance." For a long time, the business operated stably, until Joaquín Guzmán Loera, El Chapo Guzmán, refused to pay the tax demanded by the Juárez Cartel for using the plaza for the transfer of drugs. towards the United States. In 2004, Chapo Guzmán, within the framework of the dispute, ordered the murder of Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes, the Golden Boy, that same year. The Carrillo Fuentes in revenge kill Arturo Guzmán, el Pollo, brother of el Chapo Guzmán, in the La Palma prison, which put an end to the alliance.

Cipriano Carrillo Fuentes, in the mid-eighties, was the first of the six brothers to lose his life by firearm in dark circumstances.

In October 2008, the body of José Cruz Carrillo Fuentes was found burned and his remains were stolen from the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) by an armed commando.

In 2013, Alberto Carrillo Fuentes was arrested by the Federal Police in Bucerías, municipality of Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit.

In 2014, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, the Viceroy, was arrested in an operation by the Federal Police and the Army in Torreón, Coahuila.

His son, Vicente Carrillo Leyva, alias the Engineer, was arrested by the police on April 1, 2009 at his home in Las Lomas de Chapultepec in Mexico City. Since then, he was subject to six criminal proceedings, but in the end he was acquitted of four of these cases. In the Western Federal Penitentiary, in Jalisco, the Engineer finished serving the last sentence of seven years and six months in prison that was imposed on him for the crime of money laundering, obtaining his freedom again on June 12, 2018.

Vicente Carrillo Leyva, alias the Engineer, was located by the authorities in Mexico City with a false identification, but because they did not have an arrest warrant against him they let him go. The Secretary of Public Security of Mexico City, Raymundo Collins, explained that on August 23, 2018 he was detained by police at a checkpoint in Colonia Polanco. He was traveling in a van with tinted windows in the company of his driver and identified himself as Andrés Favela Vega, but "he seemed known to the officers at the checkpoint." However, the police consulted in various instances and indicated that he did not have an arrest warrant, so he was released. It was speculated that he gave the officers a briefcase with money.

Controversy over his death

There has been much speculation about whether Carrillo really died in the hospital where the events were reported to have occurred. There is talk about an alleged plan in which the kingpin's death would be faked, thus giving him total freedom of movement. Although nothing has been proven, the mystery surrounding the story of the Lord of the Skies continues to be a source of debate, giving rise to documentaries, books, series, etc., about the life of the boss. There is also a lot of speculation, but as said before, there is nothing to say if it is true, it is just speculation.
