The Fundación Alternativas is a progressive and independent Spanish think tank, born in 1997 with the aim of being a channel for political, social, economic and cultural advocacy and reflection in Spain and Europe, within the framework of growing globalization.

The main objective of the promoters is the analysis and definition of new ideas, addressing the meeting of citizens and society as a whole. Its task is also focused on making proposals to political parties and other economic and social actors with the intention that they incorporate them into decision-making.

On November 25, 2017, Fundación Alternativas celebrated its twentieth anniversary. In February 2021, the University of Pennsylvania considered it the 104 best think tank in the world, on the list of the 11,175 best it makes.

Organization

Fundación Alternativas has four work departments that cover all public policies, both from a national, European and global perspective:

  • The Alternatives Laboratory it appears as the place of reflection where it is intended to promote the elaboration of rigorous proposals to issues that concern citizens. His director is Jesús Ruíz-Huerta.
  • The External Policy Observatory (OPEX) is dedicated to the analysis and elaboration of proposals on Spanish foreign policy and the follow-up of it in the European and global framework. His director is Vicente Palacio.
  • Progress studies is a program aimed at young researchers so that they can contribute new ideas and alternatives to contemporary problems. Her director is Immaculate Ballesteros.
  • The Cultural and Communication Observatory (OCC-FA) is responsible for studying, analysing and raising initiatives in the cultural and communication sectors, both in Spain and the European Union, and in Ibero-America and Hispanic territories in the United States. Her director is Immaculate Ballesteros.
  • The Sustainability area It analyzes independently and critically the situation of the most important sectors of the country from the environmental point of view, and undertakes research to improve knowledge and address the great environmental challenges of our time, such as global warming. His coordinator is José Luis de la Cruz Leiva.

Among the members of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, since its renewal in February 2020, are Manuela Carmena, María Blasco Marhuenda, Felipe González, Rosa Regás, Javier Solana, Francisca Sauquillo, and María Emilia Casas, among others.

Activities

Colloquium on February 8, 2021 with a presentation by Javier Solana entitled USA and China: can they coexist? The challenges for the EU, and with the participation of guests at a question-and-answer table.
