Alopecurus
Alopecurus is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family, also called Foxtail, with around 25 species It is native to the temperate regions of Eurasia and South America.
Description
These herbs occur in northern temperate regions. They can be annual or perennial. They grow in tufts. They have flat leaves with blunt ligules, the inflorescences are dense panicles ending in a floral spike. Some of them are considered weeds, while others are used in floral decorations, for bouquets and dried flowers.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Carlos Linnaeus and published in Species Plantarum 1: 60–61. 1753. The type species is: Alopecurus pratensis L.
- Etymology
The name of the genus comes from the Greek alopes -ekos, (fox), and oura (tail), due to the shape of the panicle.
