Alliance of the Democratic Left
The Alliance of the Democratic Left (Polish: Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej, SLD) is the main left-wing political party in Poland. founded on April 15, 1999 and currently constitutes the third political force in the Sejm, the lower house of the National Assembly of the Republic.
Most of its members had been members of the SdRP (Socjaldemokracja Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, the Social Democratic Party of Poland). The SdRP and other socialist and social democratic parties formed a left-wing coalition called Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej (1991-1999). In 1999 the coalition became a party, but lost some members. The coalition was established by former members of the Polish United Labor Party (POUP), which ruled Poland before 1989. The POUP was a communist party, but today the SLD is a social democratic pro-European Union party. A coalition between SLD and PSL has governed Poland between 1993 and 1997 and between 2001 and 2003.
