In organic chemistry, an alkenyl group is a group derived from an alkene by removal of one of its hydrogen atoms.

Nomenclature

Its chemical formula is CnH2n-1. They are named from the alkene of origin by adding the ending enyl:

  • CH3-CH=CH- 1-propencil
  • CH2=CH-CH2-CH=CH- 1.4-pentadienyl

There are two cases in which the systematic name is almost never used:

  • CH2=CH- Vinyl group
  • CH2=CH-CH2- Alilo Group
