He has sold more than 25 million records worldwide and has won 24 Latin Grammys and 4 American Grammys. Likewise, he has collaborated with various national and international artists. He is the Adoptive Son of the city of Cádiz, having spent his childhood in Algeciras, the city of which he was appointed ambassador. He performed at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, performing along with three other internationally famous artists the song "Imagine" by John Lennon. Each of these artists represented a continent and Alexander was the representative of Europe.
He began his career in 1989 with the album Los chulos son pa' take care of them, with the stage name of Alexander the Great. In 1991 he released his second album —and the first one officially as Alejandro Sanz— titled Viviendo prisa .
Alejandro has experimented, searched and accommodated different styles. In Si tú me miras (1993) and 3 (1995), Sanz showed his compositional maturity, but it was not until 1997 with the release of Más, which included singles such as And, what if it were her?, Corazón partío or Amiga mía, when Alejandro became a legend of music in Spanish, this album being the best-selling album in the history of Spain and one of the most important in the Spanish language. Already a consolidated figure, he took the definitive step towards the American market with El alma al aire (2000), an album that hinted at that change of flamenco, Latino and rock sounds confirmed in It's not the same thing (2003) and The train of moments (2006).
In November 2009 Paraíso Express was released, which included the successful duet with the American artist Alicia Keys called Looking for Paradise.
In 2011, he turned twenty years into music, to which he paid tribute on his next album, released in 2012: La música no se toca, a classic pop album that would be his first with the Universal Music label.
In 2015, Sirope, a mix of pop, rock and funk demonstrating versatility in lyrics and styles. In 2016, immersed in his Sirope VIVO tour, he released a collaboration with the American singer Marc Anthony entitled Let me kiss you, becoming one of the songs of the summer. In 2019, he released #ElDisco, an album with 10 songs and collaborations with Camila Cabello (Mi Persona Favorita), Residente (Los Lugares), Nicky Jam (Back In The City) and Judit Neddermann (This Second). This year he was again nominated for eight categories at the Latin Grammys, of which he won three, Record of the Year and Pop Song with Camila Cabello for My Favorite Person and Best Long Form Music Video for Sanz: what I was is what am. In 2020 #ElDisco gets the award for Best Latin Pop Album at the 62nd Grammys.
In 2021 and on the occasion of his thirty-year public career "SANZ", produced by Alfonso Pérez and Javier Limón, there are sounds of black music, metals that refer to the other side of the Atlantic, Caribbean sounds, pop, sober electronic arrangements and orchestral passages, but also, going back to his origins, guitars, clapping and the rhythmic pulse of flamenco that he nurtured in his second cradle, Cádiz. "I didn't want to make a record for the charts or to get on the radio, but one that doesn't disappoint people in that it's a bunch of songs made by one musician," explains Sanz, who wanted to "summarize these 30 years. This album quickly became number one in Spain and certified platinum in its first week in sales, being one of the best-selling albums that year.
Childhood and adolescence
His father, Jesús Sánchez Madero, was a native of Algeciras and his mother, María Pizarro Medina, was from Alcalá de los Gazules. Alejandro Sanz, nephew of Luis Pizarro, leader of the PSOE and former councilor of the Junta de Andalucía. He was born in Madrid, in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, and at the age of eight he moved to the Madrid district of Moratalaz, where he studied at the Mariana Pineda Institute. At the time of his artistic explosion, he still lived with his parents in an apartment in the Osa Menor urbanization on Doctor García Tapia avenue. In his doorway, groups of teenagers would gather waiting for an autograph, well organized by the farm's doorman: Cayetano Ruiz.
He spent many vacations in his mother's town, Alcalá de los Gazules, as well as in his father's city, Algeciras, where he has filmed some of his video clips as well as having dedicated several songs to him, such as 'It Rains Joy' together with Malú or the interpretation of the single 'Guess what town I am from' reinterpreting an original letter by Florencio Ruiz Lara.
His passion for music began at a very young age. He started playing the guitar at the age of 7, and at 10 he started composing his own songs.
Already a teenager, together with Carlos Rufo (later, Melendi guitarist) he joined the heavy metal group "Immortal Horseman", highlighting singers like Dio or bands as his main influences at that time. like Motorhead. The limited commercial success of the group and the precariousness of their concerts (even having to perform in hostess clubs) made him decide to leave that formation before their recording debut in 1989, already under the name "Hiroshima".
As Alejandro himself says, his passion for music is inherited from his father, Jesús Sánchez Madero, who was a musician and was part of two groups: one of them Los 3 de la Bahía, a group with which he recorded the Simple Pablo, I'm going to kill you.
Artistic career
1989-1990: The pimps are pa' take care of them
After abandoning the heavy metal of his beginnings, he took a turn in his career at the end of 1989, recording the album Los chulos son pa' take care of them at the age of 21, under the pseudonym Alexander the Great. This Techno-Flamenco style album contained 10 tracks and was produced by Miguel Ángel Arenas. On the cover, Alexander the Great appears dressed in a bullfighting vest with frills. This album was thanks to the Galofré family, since Alejandro used to go with the Galofrés as a child to sing at his house.
For the back cover, Alejandro chooses another suit under which he reveals a T-shirt emblazoned with a smiley —acid-house banner. This album, released under the Hispavox label, was not advertised and is currently difficult to find in stores. Alejandro Sanz himself never talks about his first album nor does it appear on his official website. Shortly after, in 1990, he participated with Tino Casal in the second album by Juan Carlos Valenciaga, on the song Como un placer .
1991: Living Fast
His musical takeoff occurred in 1991, when he signed with the Warner Music label, and recorded a new LP, Living quickly, with 10 songs of his own. The album was produced by Miguel Ángel Arenas "Capi" and was recorded entirely in Spain. Musically, this album is pop-romantic in style, and is mainly focused on a female audience.
In the beginning, nobody predicted his success due to how complex his lyrics were, since they did not fit with the youth of that time. However, songs like "Los dos cogaldos de la mano", "Pisando fuerte" and "Se le apagá la luz" reached the top of the charts in Spain and stayed on the chart for more than 8 consecutive weeks. In this way, Alejandro Sanz embarked on his first promotional tour throughout the Iberian Peninsula, making presentations in theaters and small venues, gaining worldwide recognition and also in Iran and Israel.
Living Fast went on to sell over a million copies.
1993-1994: If you look at me and Basic
At the end of 1992, Alejandro Sanz traveled to London, England to prepare what would be his new record, repeating in the production Miguel Ángel Arenas, Nacho Mañó in collaboration with Paco de Lucía. This work followed the musical line of his previous album, the album was called Si tú me miras, which was released on August 17, 1993. The album was very well received by the critical, considering the artist as a “Musical poet”.
In this way, the Spanish singer-songwriter became known not only as a singer and musician, but also as a composer, thanks to songs like: If you look at me and How I miss you. The album did well in sales and although it did not exceed the figures of his previous work, this album was another step in the singer's musical career, showing a much more mature Alejandro with lyrics that spoke not only of love, but also of social topics.
The following year he recorded an acoustic special with five songs from both albums. This production in the company of Los 40 principales was called Básico and it was released at the end of 1994. That year he also collaborated on the first album by the vocalist of the group Hombres G, David Summers, playing the guitar on the song Back home. With this album, Alejandro Sanz began his second concert tour throughout Spain.
If you look at me, it sold just over 1,110,000 copies worldwide.
1995:3
In 1995 and looking for a more international sound, Alejandro traveled to Venice, Italy, to record what would be his fourth album 3. On this occasion he worked with the renowned Italian producer, Emanuele Ruffinengo and again with Miguel Ángel Arenas & # 34; Capi & # 34;, his regular producer. This album was further promoted by the record company, taking the music of the Spanish singer-songwriter, not only to Europe, but also to America.
Similarly, in the mid-1990s, it was common for highly popular singers to crossover to conquer other music markets, such as Michael Jackson and Madonna, the Italians Laura Pausini and Eros Ramazzotti or the Brazilian Caetano Veloso. For which at the end of that year, both the Spanish singer and the record company, wanting to take advantage of the album's success, decided to release 2 special editions, one in Italian and the other in Portuguese, achieving gold and platinum records for this work.
1997-1999: More
Little by little, Alejandro Sanz became known in the world of music, but it was not until the release of his album Más, that his career took a radical turn. This album, recorded entirely in Italy and Spain, was once again produced by Emanuele Ruffinengo and Miguel Ángel Arenas; and it meant the consolidation of the Spanish singer at a national and international level. His audience expanded to people of all ages and both sexes, and he became one of the best-known artists in Spain.

Considered one of the best Spanish singers worldwide. Alejandro Sanz began the new millennium with a new record, again by Emanuele Ruffinengo, this work was suggestively called El Alma al Aire, and it is the first album that Alejandro recorded in the American continent (Miami, USA). Alejandro explains the meaning of the album's title: "I think they are the two ingredients for the stew of music, which are the air and the soul. If you don't have a soul, you don't have air, there are no possibilities to do".
Moving further and further away from the original Pop sound, and gradually approaching flamenco and other more Mediterranean sounds, with this album the Spanish singer achieves yet another success in his musical career. In just one week, he breaks the sales record in Spain with 1 million copies sold, only in that country, thanks to the success of the song Cuando Nadie Me Ve. The video clip for this song was directed by the Frenchman Sebastien Grousset, where the singer appears in a ring with a woman, the singer-songwriter clarified that "it was performed in different locations in Madrid and I think it is the strongest because of the content and the scenes and it was a challenge to do it ".
Other successes followed, such as: I would like to be, in whose video clip directed by the Spanish Alejandro Toledo, the Spanish model, Esther Cañadas, participates. And as the 3rd single, the song El Alma Al Aire, also directed by Alejandro Toledo and shot in Madrid and El Escorial, had the special participation of the singer Miguel Bosé, the Spanish filmmaker Santiago Segura, as well as the actors Gabino Diego and José Coronado. The Spanish singer-songwriter begins 2023 with an overwhelming success, SANZ en Vivo en México, in addition to announcing a total of more than 70 concerts spread across Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, the United States, Puerto Rico, Chile, Ecuador, and Spain.
On March 24 he publishes his first EP titled Correcaminos which includes the single "Correcaminos" with Danny Ocean, An unexpected bet built on bases where pop, the urban and the southern air of Sanz converge. Composed by both artists, this new song reflects their natural connection, an impeccable theme where Alejandro Sanz and Danny Ocean present us with a new direction without fear and without restrictions. This is a celebratory song, chords full of music that seem fortuitous and that impose a catchy rhythm vindicating the music (Spanish and Latin), a hedonistic sample of brilliant pop without restrictions. Produced by Alizz (Rosalía, C.tangana, Amaia) “Correcaminos” is part of an EP composed by "Correcaminos" "I flew" and "When".

Personal life
Alejandro Sanz was married to Mexican model and actress Jaydy Michel. Their marriage took place in Bali on December 30, 1999, but was not legally recognized in any of the parties' countries of origin. Both have a daughter together named Manuela Sánchez Michel, born in Madrid in 2001. Sanz and Michel divorced in 2005. In 2005 he would also be the preacher of the Cádiz Carnival. That same year the singer suffered a severe blow when his father, Jesús Sánchez Madero, 65 years old, died and was buried in the La Almudena Cemetery.
In December 2006, Alejandro Sanz revealed the existence of a child, his son named Alexander Sánchez, the result of a fleeting relationship with Valeria Rivera, a fashion designer from Puerto Rico. Alexander was born in 2003, when the singer was still married to Jaydy Michel.
In July 2011, Sanz welcomed his third child, named Dylan, in New York. Dylan is the first child of his relationship with Raquel Perera, whom he married in Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres) on May 26, 2012. The couple separated in July 2019.
Alejandro Sanz also has a brother whose name is Jesús Sánchez Pizarro. Jesus is one year older than Alexander and is his only brother. Despite having a large family made up of many cousins, uncles and nephews, Jesús is the father of the singer's only two nieces.
In the early morning of April 20, 2012, his mother, María Pizarro Medina, died of a heart attack, and was cremated in the Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz) funeral home.
On July 24, 2014, Alejandro and his partner welcomed their daughter Alma at the Ruber Clinic in Madrid.
In 2019, Alejandro announces his separation from his wife Raquel Perera, after seven years of marriage.
Sentimentally related to the Cuban artist Rachel Valdés, he went with her to the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards held in November of the same year, where he officially presented her.
