Alcoyano Sports Club
The Club Deportivo Alcoyano, S.A.D. is a Spanish football team based in Alcoy, in the Valencian Community. Founded in 1928, it plays in the First Federation of Spain, with home games at the Campo del Collao, with a capacity of 4850 seats.
History
On September 13, 1928, at the home of Camilo Jordá Carbonell, a journalist from Alcoy, the representatives of the local league clubs met and decided to found the Club Deportivo Alcoyano.
1928-1936: Foundation, change of federation and the arrival of the Civil War
CD Alcoyano registered on September 11, 1929 in the Murcian Football Federation and began to play regular sports competitions.
It began its journey in the Murcia Regional Championship in the Murcian Second Category - Group B in the 1929/30 Season, finishing in a creditable third position out of a total of 5 teams.
The following season 1930/31 he played again the Regional Championship of Murcia in the Murcian Second Category - Group B, remaining in fourth position out of a total of 7 teams, and disagreements began regarding arbitrations, especially when he faced the most powerful teams in the province (Elche CF, CD Eldense and Hércules FC).
In the following season, 1931/32, he played in the Murcia Regional Championship in the Murcian Second Category - Group III, remaining Champion and obtaining the first blue and white title in its history. Later they would play the promotion group to the First Regional, and CD Alcoyano even lost 20-0 against Alicante FC and where they would finish fifth without being able to promote.
In the 1932/33 season, CD Alcoyano played again in the Murcia Regional Championship in the Murcian Second Category, finishing second out of a total of 5 teams. And from that moment he decides to change Federation, and will play in the Valencian Second Category - Section B, being framed in the southern section of the Second Category. There it will remain among the first three positions until the arrival of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
1940-1960: After the war, promotion to the First Division and the golden age of the club
After the Civil War, the team loses quality soccer players although it continues with its excellent results.
In the 1939/40 season he remains as Champion of the Valencian Regional Amateur Championship: group VIII, ascending to the first Valencian regional category.
In the 1940/41 season, the club played in the First Category of the Valencian Regional and finished fourth out of a total of 8 teams (http://arquero-arba.futbolme.net/Regionales/Comunidad%20Valenciana /1940-41/4041-1r.htm). That same season he was Regional Amateur Champion and in the Spanish Amateur Championship CD Alcoyano would lose the final against Zaragoza, in Mestalla, thus becoming runner-up in Spain Amateur.
Until the 1941/42 season arrives, in which he is once again proclaimed champion of the First Category of the Valencian Regional, and obtains third place in the national promotion phase and manages to ascend for the first time in its history to the Second National Division of the Spanish Soccer League (http://arquero-arba.futbolme.net/Regionales/Comunidad%20Valenciana/1941-42/4142-1r.htm).
The following season, 1942/43, he debuted in the silver category (Second Division) but finished last in group III with 8 teams, but was first in group IV with 5 teams in the relegation league and later returned to finish first in group II with three teams in the final relegation league, and therefore, it remains in the Second Division with a lot of effort and sacrifice (Second Division of Spain 1942-43).
The following season, 1943/44, they placed fourth in the Second Division out of a total of 14 teams, losing the first promotion tie to the first division against RCD Espanyol, even renouncing the option of playing the tie on a neutral ground (Camp de Les Corts, Barcelona, 7-1) (Second Division of Spain 1943-44).
It renews the template and in the following campaign, 1944/45, the Alcoyano CD is proclaimed champion of the Second Division on its own merits, and gets, for the first time in its history, to ascend directly to the gold category of Spanish football, that is, to the First Division (Second Division of Spain 1944-45).
As it has a very inexperienced template, in the 1945/46 season it remains in thirteenth position in First Division on 14 teams, and descends to the silver category, returning to Second Division (First Division of Spain 1945-46).
In this season, 1945/46, the Alcoyano CD achieves its greatest achievement in the Spanish Cup after reaching the 1/4 Final of the competition. In the first elimination he beat the UD Salamanca by a 3-8 global (El Helmántico, 2-3 and El Collao, 5-1). In 1/8 final he eliminated the Athletic Club of Bilbao by a 3-5 global (San Mamés, 3-3 and El Collao, 2-0). And finally it reached up to 1/4 final where it would be eliminated by Real Madrid by a 2-4 global (El Collao, 2-2 and Chamartín 2-0) (Copa del Generalísimo deFootball 1946#Cuartos de Final).
Without losing the desire to ascend, in the season 1946/47, there is again champion in the Second Division rooting with 16 victories and 6 draws, and rising again to the First Division of Spanish football (Second Division of Spain 1946-47).
El Alcoyano was one of the first clubs in Spain to have his own bus – In the year 1947, militating in the 1st division of Spanish football.
In the 1947/48 season, he returns to the first division by making his best season in the first division, remaining tenth in the standings standing in front of Real Madrid, and staying in the First Division. (First Division of Spain 1947-48).
However, one season later, 1948/49, after remaining in thirteenth position on 14 teams, descends again to the Second Division (First Division of Spain 1948-49).
One season later, 1949/50, will again be champion for the third time in group II of Second Division and after remaining fourth in a leg of promotion phase, and to play a final elimination of promotion against the Nàstic de Tarragona (Sarrià Stadium, Barcelona 3-6), the Alcoyano CD will last ascend to the First Division of Spanish football (Second Division of Spain 1949-50).
It begins the 1950s in the first division being its last season, 1950/51, in the highest category until today.
That season would end in fifteenth position on 16 teams, and at the end of the season it would descend to the Second Division of Spanish football (First Division of Spain 1950-51).
Their presence in the top division was always distressing and the club always occupied the bottom of the table fighting to escape the relegation places. But its players and managers always expressed great confidence in the final salvation. From this came the popular expression "Have more morals than the Alcoyano" which has remained in popular slang to this day. Other versions claim that the quote comes from one of the club's first games, in which the team was being defeated by four or seven goals with just a few minutes to go. After the referee's decision to end the match without reaching regulation time, there were protests from players and fans who still believed in the comeback.
Years later, in the 1953/54 season, it was relegated to the third division for the first time in its history (Second Division of Spain 1953-54). In the following 1954-55 season, he was champion of group IX, playing a promotion promotion against eight teams, finishing third without being promoted to the Second Division (Third Division of Spain 1954-55#Group IX 2).
Two years later, in the 1956-57 season, they were once again group champions and were promoted to the 2nd Division, beating RCD Mallorca (El Collao, 3-2, and El Fortín, Mallorca), 2-1), and after a playoff match at a neutral ground (Sarrià, Barcelona, 3-2), and after the final promotion tie against Unió Esportiva de Sants (El Collao, 2-0 and Camp de la Energía, Barcelona 1-0) in Barcelona (Third Division of Spain 1956-57).
The following 1957-58 season in the Second Division Gr.II it was in eighteenth place, descending to the third division again with an inexperienced squad (Second Division of Spain 1957-58).
1960-1970: A journey through the desert and the ephemeral return to the Second Division
The arrival of the 1960s brings an air of recovery, but they have not yet fully defined themselves, since their opportunities for promotion fade with the passing of the years. In the 61/62 campaign they are second in the Third Division with coach Pedro Paradilla and enter the Promotion Promotion Phase as runners-up without being promoted (Third Division of Spain 1961-62).
In this Promotion Phase, first eliminating C.D. Juventud of Zaragoza: 2-1 in the Aragonese capital and 4-1 at home; then in the second round eliminating C.D. Manchego: 2-1 in Ciudad Real and 3-0 at home; and losing in the final tie against C.D. Basconia: 0-0 at home and 2-1 in Basauri (Annex:Promotion of promotion to the Second Division of Spain 1962#Promotion of group and second division runners-up).
In the following season, 1962/63, CD Alcoyano would once again be runner-up in their Third Division group IX. (Third Division of Spain 1962-63). And they played the Promotion Elimination as runner-up in the group against CE Hospitalet, losing the overall tie by an overall score of 6-5 (Estadio Municipal de l'Hospitalet, 4-1 and in El Collao 4-2) (Annex: Promotion to the Second Division of Spain 1963 # Promotion of second division and group runners-up).
Nine seasons after the last relegation, in the 1966-67 season they would once again win the title of group IX of the Third Division, and they would be promoted after eliminating CD Eldense in the first promotion round (Municipal Stadium, Elda, 0 -1, and El Collao, 4-0), and against UE Olot in the final tie for promotion to the Second Division (Nou Estadi Municipal, 3-1 and El Collao, 4-0) (Annex: Promotion for promotion to the Second Division of Spain 1967).
In the return to the silver category (1967-68) (Second Division of Spain 1967-68)., it was in third position, without the option to play the promotion promotion and achieving permanence. That dream would only last two seasons for CD Alcoyano, because in the following 1968-69 season, they were relegated again, finishing in thirteenth position and losing the relegation promotion against UE Sant Andreu (Campo de Santa Coloma, 2-2 and El Collao, 1-2), and descending again to the third division of Spanish football (Second Division of Spain 1968-69).
1970-1977: Stay in the Third Division and in Regional Preferente Valenciana
The decade of the seventies is marked by his stay in the Third Division and in the Regional Preferente Valenciana. In the 1969/70 season, the team that had just been relegated from the second division, achieved third place, remaining seven points behind the champion, Hércules CF and promotion promotion. The following two seasons he alternated various positions in the middle of the table but in the 1973/74 season he was in sixteenth place, losing the tie for permanence against CD Villena (El Collao 1-0 and La Solana 2-0) and descending, for first time in its history to Regional preference.
In the preferential Regional, the team shows that it is still strong, remaining in second position for the next three seasons. In the first season in Regional Preference, 1974/75, they finished runner-up, and lost the promotion tie against SD Michelín Lasarte from Lasarte-Oria, Guipúzcoa (El Collao, 3-1, and Campo de Michelín 2-0, there was tiebreaker match at the Romareda, (Zaragoza) with a 1-0 victory for SD Michelín Lasarte (http://arquero-arba.futbolme.net/Regionales/Comunidad%20Valenciana/1974-75/7475-p.htm).
In the second season in Regional Preferente, 1975/76, they would once again be on the brink of promotion after being runner-up in the Valencian group, and losing against Díter Zafra from Badajoz in the promotion tie (El Collao, 1-1 and Nuevo Estadio de Zafra, 1-0) (http://www.arquero-arba.futbolme.net/Regionales/Comunidad%20Valenciana/1975-76/7576-p.htm). One season later, 1976/77, CD Alcoyano was once again runner-up in the South Valencian Regional Preferred group, and achieved direct promotion to the Third Division of Spanish football when there was a significant increase in the number of teams in the Third Division. (http://arquero-arba.futbolme.net/Regionales/Comunidad%20Valenciana/1976-77/7677-p-s.htm).
1977-1996: Return to the Third Division, debut and 14 consecutive seasons in Second Division B.
After being promoted from Regional Preferred, already in the Third Division, Deportivo Alcoyano remains among the top positions and in the middle of the table for 4 seasons.
Until the 1981/82 season, in which they remain group champions (Third Division of Spain 1981-82).
In the promotion phase, they face Orihuela Deportiva losing 4-2 in the total of the first round (El Collao 2-2 and Los Arcos 2-0). But luck smiles at Deportivo Alcoyano due to the relegation due to non-payment of Levante UD and is administratively promoted to Segunda B, for the first time in its history, along with Zamora CF and CD Fuengirola, who take advantage of Getafe CF's administrative relegations and UD Almería (Annex: Promotion to Second Division B of Spain 1982).
In the new Segunda División B it will remain for fourteen consecutive seasons, remaining in the middle of the table and twice fourth in the final classification (1989/90 and 1990/91).
In the 1990/91 season, CD Alcoyano was in fourth position (Second Division B of Spain 1990-91) and entered the Group C Promotion Promotion Phase together with SD Compostela, CD Badajoz and Deportivo Alavés, where he will remain in third position (Annex: Promotion to the Second Division of Spain 1991).
1996- 2004: A new journey of 8 seasons in the desert of the Third Division
After a very good run in Second Division B, in the 1995/96 season, Deportivo finished seventeenth in the standings and returned to the Third Division after fourteen consecutive years in Second B (Second Division B of Spain 1995 -96).
In his first season in the Third Division, 1996-1997, he was champion of his group VI (Tercera Division of Spain 1996-97), but lost the options for promotion in the penultimate game against Lorca CF in Lorca (San José, 5-2), in Group C1 of the promotion group together with CD Manacor and UE Badaloní (Annex: Promotion of promotion to Second Division B of Spain 1997).
Several years later, 1998/99, they would finish third in group VI of the Third Division, and again third in group C1 of the Promotion Phase with Lorca CF, AEC Manlleu and CD Atlético Baleares (Annex: Promotion promotion Second Division B of Spain 1999) without getting the long-awaited promotion.
The nineties have been consumed when fears of another relegation to Regional are feared again, in the 2000/01 season.
Already in the new century, the results began to improve, staying in the middle of the table or caressing promotion by finishing fifth (2002-2003 season).
One year after finishing fifth, thanks to the Chilean Roberto Granero, he achieved his well-deserved promotion in the 2003-2004 season, finishing runner-up in Group VI (Third Division of Spain 2003-04). And later winning the promotion qualifiers from group C4 of the Promotion Phase to UD Poblense de La Puebla, in the Balearic Islands, 1-5 on aggregate in the first promotion round (Nou Camp de La Puebla 0-2 and El Collao 3-1), and to the AD Mar Menor de San Javier, Murcia 2-0 overall in the final promotion tie (El Collao 2-0 and El Pitín 0-0) (Annex: Promotion to Second Division B of Spain 2004). In this final match there was, surely, the largest visitor displacement of the CD Alcoyano fans in all of its recent history.
2004-2011: Return to Second Division B and consolidation of the team
His new career in Segunda B, 2004/05, starts off on the right foot, finishing in seventh position, nine points behind Real Zaragoza B.
A season later, in 2005/06, they are fifth in the table and very close to promotion. The team continues to level up.
In a very meritorious Copa del Rey 2005/06, CD Alcoyano would reach the 1/16 final where they lost to At. Madrid 0-1 at El Collao. Previously, they had comfortably eliminated RCD Mallorca, then playing in the first division, 4-1 in the third round at El Collao.
In the following season, 2006/07, at the hands of Juan Ignacio Martínez they reached a deserved third position and qualified for the promotion phase. In the first phase, they face Burgos CF, losing on penalties in Burgos after a 0-0 aggregate win in the tie (El Collao, 0-0 and El Plantío, 0-0 (pen. 5-4).
In the following season 2007-2008, the equipment is in a simple ninth position. While in the 2007/08 Copa del Rey he would go back to the 1/16 final where he would be eliminated by FC Barcelona (0-3 at El Collao and 2-2 at the Nou Camp), where the morality team It left a very good taste in my mouth.
But the following 2008-2009 season they were proclaimed group champions (Second Division B of Spain 2008-09). In the group champions phase, they face FC Cartagena, losing against the Murcian team by an overall 4-3 (Cartagonova, 2-1 and El Collao, 2-2) a disastrous memory for the fans of Alcoy, since there were many illusions deposited in that ascent and with El Collao full to overflowing. In the next play-off tie for the promotion phase, again luck was not on their side and they lost against AD Alcorcón 2-2 on aggregate in favor of AD Alcorcón (Santo Domingo, 1-0 and El Collao, 2- 1) (Annex: Promotion to the Second Division of Spain 2009).
2011-2019: The return to the Second Division 42 years later and a new relegation to the Third Division
After becoming champion and failing to be promoted, in the 2009/10 season they ranked fourth. They once again had the bad luck of drawing and losing against SD Eibar by 0-2 on aggregate (El Collao, 0-0 and Ipurúa, 2-0).
In the 2010/11 season, they came third in the table, qualifying for the third consecutive year for the promotion phase. In the first round, they easily beat Real Madrid Castilla, winning 0-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and drawing at 2 goals in Alcoy. Then, the very tough Éibar played again with whom they tied at home to zero and drawing 1-1 in Éibar. They went to the final against CD Lugo, winning at El Collao with a goal from Raúl Fabiani and winning in Lugo with a goal from César Remón.
In the 2011/12 season, Deportivo Alcoyano returned to the Second Division 42 years later. In the Second Division, they would be penultimate in the standings and were relegated to Second B.
The following season, 2012/13, they would be classified in fourth position (Second Division B of Spain 2012-13) and would qualify to play the Play-Off for promotion, but they would lose in the first round against SD Eibar by 2- 2 in El Collao and 1-1 in Ipurúa. (Annex:Promotion of promotion to the Second Division of Spain 2013)
On August 1, 2014, the club managed to complete the transformation process into a "Sociedad Anónima Deportiva".
Until the 2016-2017 season, they did not qualify again for the Play-Off for promotion, and they did so as second place behind Barça B. In the draw, FC Cartagena (black beast, and rival of bad memory for the 2009 tie), being eliminated in the first round, drawing 0-0 in Cartagonova and losing 0-2 in El Collao.
In the 2018/2019 season they would be in sixteenth position, qualifying to play the Play-out for permanence against Real Club Celta de Vigo B, losing the first leg 1-0 at Campo Municipal de Barreiro and 0-1 in El Collao thus causing his return to the Spanish Third Division after another trajectory of fourteen years in a row in Second Division B.
2019-2020: The COVID-19 pandemic arrives, an atypical year in the Third Division and the return to Second Division B
The 2019-2020 season is suspended in mid-March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic with Alcoyano as the undisputed leader of the group. On May 25, the RFEF issued a statement saying that the classification is validated as it was before the suspension of the competition, therefore Alcoyano remained as group champion. Later, the RFEF announced that the play-off would be territorial, that is, between the teams in play-off positions in the same group (1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd) in a single match. Between the two confrontations, the final would come out. They drew 0-0 against CF Intercity and lost in the final 0-1 against Atzeneta UE. Having been group champion, he had the right to play an additional play-off against other group champions who did not win the final. In the draw, he was awarded Loyalty, but just 2 hours before the game, it was announced that three CD Marino players had tested positive for coronavirus, for which reason the play-off had to be suspended. The next day it was announced that the positives were false positives, but the teams were already each in their city. After several days of silence, the RFEF finally announced on August 10 that the four teams participating in the additional play-off would be promoted to Second B.
2020-2021: A King's Cup for history and promotion to the First Federation
After being promoted to Segunda B through the federation's statement, the Segunda B (which would be the last season of this competition) would be made up of 102 teams, divided into 5 groups, where each group has two subgroups. Alcoyano was included in group III-B, along with other Valencian and Balearic teams.
In the first round of the cup they beat CD Laredo 4-1, then in 1/32 of the final they played SD Huesca, which they also eliminated 2-1 at Collao. Then, in the draw for the 1/16 final, Real Madrid CF was lucky to win at El Collao.
On January 20, 2021, in the 1/16 final, Alcoyano made history by eliminating Real Madrid CF from the 2020-21 Copa del Rey, beating them 2-1 at home, after taking the match to the extension.
Finally, after eliminating Real Madrid CF, they fell to Athletic Club de Bilbao in the 1/8 final, who would win 1-2 at El Collao in a highly disputed match that left a very good taste in the mouths of the Alcoy fans.
Again, the famous phrase "Tener more Moral than the Alcoyano" and "La Moral del Alcoyano" was recalled throughout Spain, after demonstrating the claw and tesón of the team of the CD Alcoyano of Second Division B that had managed to eliminate two all-powerful teams of First Division (SD Huesca and Real Madrid CF) and arrive until the 1/8 final of the Copa del Rey 2020 against another First Division team.
After a magnificent season, on March 14, 2021, they achieved their second consecutive category promotion, in this case to the First Federation, after beating Atzeneta UE 0-1.
2021-2022: A new category, the First Federation and again the morale team in the Copa del Rey
CD Alcoyano continues to make history by launching a new category of Spanish football, the First Federation. At the same time, the morale team begins a new adventure in the 2021-22 Copa del Rey. In the first qualifying round they beat CD Badajoz 0 - 3 CD Alcoyano. In the Second qualifying round CD Alcoyano 3 (3 pen.) - 3 (1 pen.) Levante UD on December 14, 2021 in El Collao, The moral team would end up reaching, again, until the 1/16 final where they would be eliminated by Real Madrid CF on January 5, 2022 in El Collao (Alcoy) by a final result of 1-3.
Stadium
The home venue is the Campo de El Collao stadium, located on Avenida Oliver s/n, in Alcoy. It was inaugurated on August 28, 1921, on land that belonged to the paper industrialist D. Francisco Laporta Boronat, who gave it selflessly for the construction of Campo del Collao. The first team to play at Collao was Real Alcodiam Deportivo (forerunner of the current Club Deportivo Alcoyano).
The good relations between the president and the board of Alcodiam with the high military officials who resided in the city, helped a lot in being able to get the leveling of the pitch, and thanks to Don Ramón García-Reguera, colonel of the Infantry Regiment Vizcaya no. measures appropriate to the field of Collao.
The Municipal "Campo de El Collao" is a municipal sports facility inaugurated in 1921. It has an approximate capacity of 4,850 spectators and its playing field measures 102 by 63 meters of natural grass. On the occasion of the Promotion to the Second Division on June 26, 2011, the lawn and irrigation system were replaced for the first time in its history. Due to its singular construction, it is often said that it is an English-style course, and it usually presents good public entrances.
