Alcinous

Ulysses in the Court of Alcínooby Francesco Hayez (1813–1815).

In Greek mythology, Alcinoos (in Greek Ἀλκίνοος Alkínoös, 'powerful mind') is the son of Nausítoo and king of the Phaeacians in Esqueria.

Alcínoo married his niece Arete, (daughter of Rexénor), with whom he was the father of Nausícaa, Laodamante, Halio and Clitoneo.

In the legend of the Argonauts

In the myth of the Argonauts, Alcinous is king in Corcyra (Corfu). He welcomed the Argonaut Jason and Medea into his palace on their flight from Colchis after stealing the Golden Fleece. Upon his arrival, Alcinous asked that Medea be returned to her parents if she was still a virgin. Jason and Medea then promptly consummated their marriage, officiated by Arete.

Into the Odyssey

In the Odyssey Alcínoo is king of the Phaeacians on the island Esqueria (perhaps we should identify it with Corfu) along with 12 other kings. Alcínoo welcomed Odysseus into his palace after a shipwreck and he told him about his adventures.

Despite Poseidon's threats —angry with Odysseus for blinding his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus—, Alcinous helps Odysseus complete his journey by sending him on a ship to his destination: the island of Ithaca. Poseidon complains to Zeus who suggests punishing the Phaeacians by transforming the ship returning from Ithaca before his eyes into a marble rock that blocks the port of Phaeacia.

Alcínoo was the object of a heroic cult in the city of Córcira (one of the two ports of the city bears his name).
