Albanian politics
The Politics of Albania take place in a representative democratic parliamentary republic, through which the prime minister is the head of government. The executive power is exerced by the government. Legislative power is vested in the government and Parliament (Kuvendi i Republikës së Shqipërisë).
Executive Branch
President
The President is the head of state of Albania, and is elected for a 5-year term by the Assembly of the Republic by secret ballot. He is required to receive a 50% + 1 majority of the votes of all deputies. The current president is Bujar Nishani, elected in July 2012.
The president has the power to guarantee the observance of the country's constitution and all laws, well that is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, in addition to exercising the powers of the Assembly of the Republic while it is not in office session, and to point the Head of the Council of Ministers (prime minister).
Prime Minister
The prime minister (Head of the Council of Ministers) is appointed by the president. The other ministers are chosen by the president under the indication of the prime minister. The Albanian Assembly has the final say regarding the composition of the Cabinet.
