The Alaskan flag represents, on a blue background, the stars that make up the constellation Ursa Major and, in the upper right corner, the North Star.

The flag was designed by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old student, who won a competition among 142 participants. It was made of blue silk with appliqué stars, the symbolism of which is the inspiration for the official state song: "Alaska's Flag".

The Alaska Legislature adopted it on May 2, 1927 as the emblem of the then Territory of Alaska, and it was first flown on July 9 of the same year. Beginning in 1959, with the election of Alaska as the 49th state in the Union, it was maintained as a state ensign.
