Alan arkin
Alan Wolf Arkin (New York, March 26, 1934) is an award-winning American actor, musician, and film and theater director who has behind him a prestigious professional career in both film as in television, literature and music.
Biography
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, Arkin launched his career with the play The Second City. That earned him his first role on Broadway as the lead in Carl Reiner's play Enter Laughing , which earned him the Tony Award, one of the most prestigious in American theater.
In 1998 he directed, starred in, and co-wrote with Elaine May the production of Power Plays at the Promenade Theatre.
His film debut came with the film The Russians Are Coming!, in 1966, for which he earned two nominations for the Best Actor Oscar and the Golden Globe. 1968's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter also earned him another Best Actor Oscar nomination. In 2006 he won an Oscar, as a supporting actor, for his role in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), also nominated for Best Picture.
Arkin has written and directed two short films: T.G.I.F. (1967) and People Soup (1969). The former opened the New York Film Festival, and the latter received an Oscar nomination for Best Short Film.
He has starred in the highly regarded A&E series, Centre Street Courthouses (100 Center Street, 2001-1002), written and directed by Sidney Lumet. Among the actor's other television appearances are his Emmy-nominated performances in Pentagon Papers (2003), for FX, and Escape from Sobibór (1987). He guest-starred as the father of his real-life son, Adam Arkin, in Chicago Hope (1997), which also earned him another Emmy nomination, and he also appeared in Varian's War (2001), for Showtime, and in the HBO production, And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (2003), with Antonio Banderas.
He has also directed the television adaptation of the Broadway play, Twings (1975), with Carol Burnett.
Arkin has also written six books, all published by HarperCollins, the latest of which, under the title Cassie Loves Beethoven, was published by Hyperion. One of his first novels, The Lemming Condition, has been selling non-stop for twenty years, and has also been recognized by Book Sellers of America for having entered the the White House Library.
He is the father of actors Adam Arkin, Anthony Arkin and Matthew Arkin.
