The flag of the state of Alabama was passed by Act 383 of the Alabama state legislature on February 16, 1895:

The flag of the state of Alabama will be a cross of San Andrés Carmesi in a white field. The bars that form the cross should not be less than six inches wide and should spread diagonally through the flag side by side. - (Code 1896, §3751; Code 1907, §2058; Code 1923, §2995; Code 1940, T. 55, §5.)

The Saint Andrew's cross mentioned is a diagonal cross, known in vexillology as an aspa. Because the bars must be at least six inches wide, small representations of the Alabama flag do not meet the legal definition.

The cross of Burgundy, used in southern Alabama until 1800.

It is based on the Cross of Burgundy, the flag of the old Spanish Empire since its introduction into Spain in the 16th century by Philip I of Castile, when the Spanish Empire explored and annexed the lands of Alabama in Spanish Florida that lasted from 1513 to 1821.
