The Akutagawa Prize (芥川龍之介賞, Akutagawa Ryūnosuke Shō? ) is Japan's most prestigious literary award, named after Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It was established in 1935 by the writer Kan Kikuchi, editor of the magazine Bungeishunjū, and is currently sponsored by the Nihon Bungaku Shinkō Kai, an organization in charge of promoting Japanese literature.

Awarded twice a year (in January and July) to the best strictly literary story published in any medium, written by a new or rising author. The prize consists of a pocket watch and one million yen in cash (about eight thousand euros).

History

Founded in 1935 by the Japanese writer Kan Kikuchi, the Akutagawa Prize honors the best literary story published in print or in a magazine by a new or growing author. The jury usually includes contemporary writers, literary critics or former winners among its list of winners. Occasionally when consensus cannot be reached among the jury members, due to disputes over the finalist stories or the quality of the work published in the corresponding half of the year under review, the award is forfeited. Between 1945 and 1948 it was not held due to the situation generated during the Japanese postwar period after the end of World War II.
