Agustín Sáenz Vázquez de Quintanilla and Sendín de Sotomayor
Agustín Sáenz Vázquez de Quintanilla y Sendín de Sotomayor (Madrid, Spain, February 1631 - Cartago, Costa Rica, December 1675) was a Spanish soldier, mayor of Chiapas from 1668 to 1673.
He was born in Madrid, Spain, and was baptized in the parish of San Martín in that city in 1631. His parents were Francisco Sáenz-Vázquez de Quintanilla y Fajardo, notary of the Royal House of the Treasury (born in Madrid in 1598 and died in that city in 1667), IIIer. holder of the Mayorazgo de Sáenz-Vázquez, and Angela Sendín de Sotomayor y Almelda, who married in Madrid in 1619. His paternal family traced its origin to Lope Sáenz, who in the century XV was a resident of the place of Quintanilla-Montecambios in the mountains of Burgos.
In 1661 he married Antonia Moreno Gil, with whom he had a son, Juan Francisco Sáenz Vázquez de Quintanilla y Moreno, who was captain of the army and encomendero of Atatolapa and Solotepeque and of even partialities in the towns of Sacatepeque and Santiago Yatalón in Chiapas.
He was at the service of the Spanish army since 1649 and participated in numerous armed actions, especially in Italy, Cádiz, La Coruña and Portugal. He was a prisoner in England for several months.
In 1667 he was appointed mayor of Chiapas, a position he assumed in 1668 and held until 1673. His residency trial, concluded in June 1674, was very favorable to him.
Once the residence was completed, he moved with his family to Costa Rica, a province of which his older brother Juan Francisco Sáenz-Vázquez de Quintanilla y Sendín de Sotomayor was governor since April 1674. The president of the Royal Court of Guatemala Fernando Francisco de Escobedo appointed him as field master of Costa Rica, but he died shortly after. His wife spent her last years in retreat in the convent of Santa Catalina Mártiur in Santiago de Guatemala.
He died in Cartago, Costa Rica, in December 1675.
