José Agustín Acosta y Bello (Matanzas, Cuba, November 12, 1886 - Miami, Florida, United States, March 12, 1979). He is one of the most famous Cuban writers of the 20th century.

Biography

He was born in the city of Matanzas on November 12, 1886. He studied law, graduating with the title of Doctor of Laws. He practiced his profession in his hometown while he also achieved a successful political life after being jailed for his opposition to the government of President Gerardo Machado. He always expressed himself and acted according to his political and moral convictions. After the fall of Machado, he became the provisional governor of the province of Matanzas (1933-1934) and served as secretary of the presidency during the government of President Carlos Mendieta. He was also elected Senator of the Republic, and served as such from 1936 to 1944. He was president of the Nationalist Union Party.

From 1938 he was a member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters of Cuba, of the prestigious Cuban Academy of Language and was named National Poet by the Cuban Congress in 1955. He collaborated in various national publications of recognized importance, such such as Letras, El Fígaro, El Cubano, Libre, Orto, Social, Carteles, Diario de la Marina, Las Antillas, Ariel, Archipiélago and other important newspapers and magazines.

Acosta's work includes some of the first lyrical poems free from the pessimism that dominated Cuban poetry at the beginning of the republic. Along with Regino Boti and José Manuel Poveda, he is one of the representatives of the lyrical renaissance that took place in the provinces before the 1920s. His style stands out for the simplicity of postmodernism with accents, in certain well-defined poems, of modernism. and romanticism. He was a precursor of social poetry in Cuba. In many of his poetry he knew how to express his love for the Cuban land. Some of his poems have been translated into French.

For family reasons, he left the Island with his wife in December 1972 to be with their daughter. He died in the city of Miami, Florida on March 12, 1979.

The literary archive with the collections of Agustín Acosta Bello is in the Cuban Heritage Collection, in the library of the University of Miami. The collection contains correspondence between the writer and his contemporaries as well as pamphlets, photographs, memorabilia, other writings, and scrapbooks.
