Aguascalientes (Acerca de este sonido/aŭska'ljen/t/es/) is a Mexican city, capital of the state of the same name and municipal head of the municipality of the same name. According to data from the last Census of the INEGI in 2020, with a population of 863,893 inhabitants being in this way the 15th most populous city of Mexico while the Metropolitan Area of Aguascalientes is the 13th most populous metropolitan area in Mexico with a population of 1,140,916 inhabitants.

The historic complex of the city of Aguascalientes is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the heritage of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. The city is located in the center-south area of the state, in the valley that bears the same name. It is part of the Bajío macro-region.

It is known for its textiles, its thriving electronics and automotive industry, its San Marcos National Fair, as well as for having a deep-rooted bullfighting and bullfighting culture. Due to its tourist attractions and because it is an important pole of regional development, it receives a considerable number of international visitors, mainly from the United States, Spain, Japan, France and Argentina.

Toponymy

The name of the city is due to the abundance of hot springs, for which it was named Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes. The existence of these hot springs gave rise to baths for general use by the population, such as the Old Baths of Ojo Caliente (still in use) and Los Arquitos, the latter adapted as a cultural center. The city of Aguascalientes is located in the Southern Highlands together with the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Zacatecas, precisely to the north of the Neovolcanic Axis, and in the valley of the same name, in the Aguascalientes valley are (now to a lesser amount) hot springs to which the state and the capital owe their name. Since the end of the 20th century, water has been pumped from reservoirs more than 400 meters deep. However, it retains its characteristic temperature. It is so hot in some areas that the local water concessionaire needs to deposit it in huge tanks to cool it down, as its high temperatures would damage the pipes and make it dangerous for users.

Gentilic

The name for residents of the capital, by extension, is the same as for the inhabitants of the state: aguascalentense or hidrocálido (a).

Hydrography and orography

As the city of Aguascalientes and the state are located in the Mexican Highlands, together with the states of Guanajuato, Querétaro and parts of Zacatecas, Jalisco and Michoacán; the precipitations are little and they become abundant towards the south. The riverbeds are scarce. The San Pedro River or Aguascalientes River borders the city entering from the north, then surrounds it from the west to move away to the south-west, to which it joins from the east (now all of them intubated) the Cedazo and Pirules streams. This first runs under Adolfo López Mateos avenue until it meets the San Pedro river, which is in turn a tributary of the Santiago river. It is without large flow river currents.

History

Historical center of Aguascalientes.
La exedra, Plaza de la Patria.

After the arrival of Cortés and the fall of Tenochtitlán in 1521, the conquest led many adventurous Spaniards to move north in search of their fortune. These lands, in addition to being more arid than those they had found in Veracruz and in the Valley of Mexico, they were inhabited by indigenous people who were mostly nomads and who soon became the terror of the still poorly traced roads that connected New Spain with this other part of the territory, to which the name was given. of New Galicia. Its territory, being the nucleus of the formation of its homonymous entity, was always linked to Zacatecas, first being this province of the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia between 1575 and 1786; and later as an Intendancy (1786-1821), and finally as a State or Department (1821-1857), until its separation from it and establishment as a federal entity in 1857. At the end of 2012, the metropolis reached more than 1 million inhabitants.

The audience of Nueva Galicia – the institution in charge of the government and administration of the new territories – settled in Guadalajara, at the same time that deposits of silver were discovered on the Cerro de la Bufa, where the silver mines would soon appear. Zacatecas. These mines became the economic engine of Nueva Galicia and their exploitation made it necessary to open roads not only between Guadalajara and Zacatecas, but also between the mines and Mexico City, Querétaro and Michoacán, where a good part of the silver was taken. extracted.

From the beginning the roads were assaulted by groups of Chichimecas (as the Indians of the northern border of New Spain were called) and due to the constant attacks, a war began that lasted throughout the entire second half of the 16th century. For this reason the Spanish established villas along the roads. These were both fortified posts and resting places for travelers. This is how Santa María de los Lagos was born in 1563 and a few years later the settlers who would found the city of Aguascalientes left there. These settlers were people of rather humble origin, who left the town of Lagos (today Lagos de Moreno) due to the abuses of the local authorities and also because of the desire they had to obtain new land grants.

Aguascalientes as part of the Province of Nueva Galicia

Aguascalientes dentro de la Provincia de Nueva Galicia o Xalisco.

It was part of the Province of Nueva Galicia, present-day Nayarit and Jalisco, in the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia between its foundation and 1786, and of the Municipality of Guadalajara from 1786 to 1821.

Altos de Jalisco as part of Aguascalientes

Department of Aguascalientes.

During the Second Mexican Empire of the Austrian Archduke Maximilian, the Altos de Jalisco formed part of the Department of Aguascalientes, as a natural continuation, taking cultural and geographical aspects into account.

The territorial divisions throughout the history of Mexico have generally been linked to political changes and not to a spatial distribution tending to improve the administrative, economic and social development of the national territory. On March 3, 1865, one of the most important decrees of the Maximilian government appeared for the first division of the territory of the new Empire and it was published in the Diario del Imperio on March 13 of the same year. This mission was entrusted to Don Manuel Orozco y Berra (1816-1881) and this division was carried out according to the following bases:

Urban outline

Centro de Aguascalientes overlooking Cerro del Muerto.

The urban development of Aguascalientes, and in particular the metropolitan area, was one of the best in the country.

In the city of Aguascalientes two urban layouts can be distinguished, the old one usually found in Spanish colonial cities of the XVI century and XVII; and the second, more modern and better planned, trying to take care of its viability, with alternate avenues as far as possible. In addition, since the city is located in the valley, it does not have significant elevations that make it difficult to trace. The old line is located inside the ring that forms the 1914 Convention Avenue and the second outside of this ring.

Aguascalientes has three more or less concentric rings. The first of these was once the outskirts of the city, named in memory of the 1914 Revolutionary Convention, "Avenida Convención de 1914" Now it is a relatively central avenue, by car it takes 10 minutes from any point of it to the Plaza de Armas in the center of the city. The second ring named in honor of the city "avenida Aguascalientes" It also served as a peripheral and the growth of the city meant that this avenue was in the middle of many neighborhoods and subdivisions, from any point of this road it takes approximately twenty minutes to the Plaza de Armas. And finally the third ring, named in allusion to progress and our contemporaneity that we had to live through the turn of the century "avenida Siglo XXI" It is not finished in its entirety (it does not make a ring) because this would imply crossing and perhaps destroying important, very fertile crop fields to the west of the city; a small part of this avenue is in the municipality of Jesús María (in the suburban part with Aguascalientes) and there it changes its name in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, "avenida Guadalupe".

Main roads

The city of Aguascalientes, in addition to its three avenues in the form of concentric rings, is crossed by Héroe de Nacozari avenue from north to south, and by Adolfo López Mateos avenue from east to west, although neither of them reaches the third ring at one of its ends (Nacozari to the north is truncated into the 2nd ring, and López Mateos to the east is almost truncated to the 2nd ring). Héroe de Nacozari avenue owes his name in honor of Jesús García Corona, hero of his town Nacozari, Sonora, for which he sacrificed his life.
