Ageo (上尾市, Ageo-shi?>) is a city located in Saitama, Japan.

According to data from 2003, the city has an estimated population of 216,870 inhabitants and a density of 4,761.14 people per km². The total area is 45.55 km².

The area of the current municipality had been the rural countryside where barley had been grown. Due to the meager supply of water from the small rivers, in the past they were able to cultivate few water paddy fields. Rice productivity was higher than other cereals. That is to say that Haggai was not rich in many years of its history.

In the 16th century, the roads to Edo became very important in Japan's traffic system. The Nakasen Road (中山道 Nakasen-dō) is one of them. The Tokugaewa shogunate established the lodging village of Ageo (上尾宿) near the town of Ageo (上尾村). It was the origin of the city of Ageo. The population was about a thousand, small among the roadside lodging towns.

Ageo Railway Station was opened in 1883. The Ageo Host Town and the five towns (Ageo, Ageoshimo, Kashiwaza, Kasugayatsu, Yatsu) were merged into the new Ageo Town in 1889. The five towns of Hirakata, Haraichi, Kamihira, Ōishi, Ōtani were incorporated in 1955, Ageo obtained city status on July 15, 1958 with population over 37,000. In the second half of the XX century, some metallurgy and automobile factories were built. Housing increased as a suburb of Tokyo and the southern cities of Saitama Prefecture.
