Aegopogon is a genus of plants in the Poaceae family, native to tropical Asia and North and South America. It comprises 35 described species and of these, only 4 accepted.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Humb & Bonpl ex Willd and published in Species Plantarum. Editio quarta 4(2): 899. 1805[1806]. The type species is: Aegopogon cenchroides Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.

Etymology

Aegopogon: generic name derived from the Greek words: " aix (goat) and pogon (beard), referring to the awn fascicles.
