The term acracy (from the Greek α-, a "no", and κράτος, kratos "power") designates a conception that denies the need for the existence of any kind of authority. Widely used as a synonym for anarchy, the root of the concept is not the same: while anarchy refers to the absence of a government or State that directs society, acarace implies the absence of coercion.

In the etymological sense, the word acracy expands the idea of anarchy, indicating not only an anti-state organized society, but also a social order based on the principle of non-state aggression, in which the social norms of coexistence are the result of voluntary agreements, and where the legitimacy of any imposition by force is rejected. The words acrata (adjective) and acracia probably originated during the 20th century.
