Acrachne is a genus of plants in the Poaceae family. It is native to Africa, temperate or tropical regions of Asia, Australasia or South America.

Description

They are annual plants. Leaf-blades broadly linear, flat, ligules a ciliated membrane. Inflorescence open, composed of a number of spikes arranged along a central axis. Spikelets several-many flowered, oblong with a serrate outline, laterally compressed. Ornate, highly sulcate grain, enclosed within a hyaline pericarp.

Taxonomy

Acrachne was described by Wright & arn. ex Chiov. and published in Annuario del Reale Istituto Botanico di Roma 8(3): 361. 1908.

Etymology

Acrachne: Generic name derived from the Greek Akra (the end point) and achne (to scale).), referring to the points on glumes and lemmas.
