Oh My Goddess! (ああっ女神さま っ, Aa! Megami-sama?) also known as Ah! My Goddess and Oh my Goddess! is a seinen-themed manga and anime series created by Kōsuke Fujishima that blends comedy, drama, and Romance. First published in 1988 and completed in 2014, the last volume was released in July of that same year, consisting of forty-eight volumes in total and it continues to be published in several countries in addition to Japan, such as: China, the United States, Spain, Mexico, among others.

Plot

The story centers on Keiichi Morisato, a former college student who is fond of motorcycles. One day, Keiichi accidentally calls a "goddesses technical helpline" — In the OVAs he was trying to order food delivery, while in the manga and anime series he was leaving a message — and the beautiful goddess Belldandy appears through the looking glass, offering him a wish. As he doesn't understand what is happening, Keiichi wishes for Belldandy (whom he finds very attractive) to stay with him forever, and her wish is immediately granted. As a consequence, Keiichi, who lived in an exclusive dormitory for men at the university, is expelled from the building and is forced to find a new home, which he finds in a Buddhist temple that was abandoned after the monk who lived there left. to India for a pilgrimage.

This is further complicated when Belldandy's sisters, Urd and Skuld, move in with them, bringing them even more trouble.

The three goddesses are based on the norns of Norse mythology Urd, Verdandi/Verthandi and Skuld, which represent the past, present and future. These norms live in one of the wells that feed the Yggdrasil, and protect it. The manga goddesses access a computer system with the same name as an analogy for the Yggdrasil tree that supports all the worlds, an ash tree.

Pilot

Prior to starting Oh My Goddess!, Kōsuke Fujishima had been working on the manga You're under Arrest or Estás Arrestado for some time., Miyuki Kobayakawa, one of the main characters of the series, was drawn as the character of a Goddess in a yonkoma for a contest. While the exact relationship between this initial goddess and the series Ah! My Goddess is not clear, there is a belief that Ah! My Goddess was something of a spin-off story. Regardless of origin, the concept of a goddess "by way of work" interested Fujishima enough to publish the first appearance of the series in Afternoon in August 1988.

Universe of the series

The universe of the sleeve Aa! Megami-sama is vaguely based on the popular culture of Nordic mythology. It is divided into at least three worlds; heaven, hell and earth, but it has been indicated that there are also many other worlds. Heaven is the Kingdom of God and the goddess, while hell belongs to the Daimakaicho and demons. The earth is the kingdom of human beings and until recently, not inhabited by goddess or demons, largely because they can create an imbalance in the happiness of the world. reality is controlled by an enormous and complex computer system called "Yggdrasil", the name taken from the tree in the Nordic mythology.

Characters

  • Belldandy (check-out registration) is a first-class goddess, second-class and unlimited power being its alternative source of sleeping energy. It controls the wind and represents the present. At the beginning of history it appears to be 21 years old, having been born on 1 January. It comes from the Gods' Assistance Office, it measures 1.65m. His angel is called Holy Bell. It is the personification of softness, being always pleasant, has no bad thought, its weakness is the soda of tail, which makes it drunk. When you receive the order to remain on Earth before Keiichi forever, you fully adjust and then begin your new life. She has as her older sister, Urd, and another minor, Skuld, two most problematic goddess with which she sometimes has difficulties. Graphically, it is the character in which you notice more evolution in the course of the volumes of the sleeve.
  • Keiichi Morisato (apartment一) is a university student, a lover of motorized vehicles, who does not care about the outside but rather the interior of the people. Luck and bad luck is very common in your life, and you have bad luck with women for being small (it is only 1.60 meters). But her life changes radically when she meets Belldandy: she makes her company and also brings her some luck, so she starts a life totally different from what he was used to. He's an undecided, extremely friendly and enthusiastic young man.
  • Urd (sing) is the goddess of the past in Nordic mythology and a hybrid of goddess and demon, because of this his guardian angel has a white wing and a black wing as well as his hair and dress, is called World Of Elegance. Her temper is strong, but at the same time she's seductive. It is very far from managing its powers but tends to exaggerate in its use by making these always cause a disaster, so it was banished from Asgard (home of the gods in the Nordic mythology, in the case of the series it is simply called heaven), and must then live with Belldandy and Keiichi, then it is followed by Skuld. Her weak point is to listen to enka style music, which makes her sleep deeply and immediately and her alternative energy source is sake. Originally she is the system administrator in the "Yggdrasil system" (system with which God controls the universe) but she escapes from heaven and becomes the Celestine in the relationship of Keiichi and Belldandy and for this she uses her ability to make potions.
  • Skuld (Audience counselor) is the goddess of the future in Nordic mythology and the third to appear, Belldandy's younger sister, has a guardian angel named Noble Scarlet, is very fun, but knowing that Keiichi is with her sister gets very jealous, since she thinks he will keep her away from her sister. Its alternative energy source is ice cream. He is a genius of technology and mechanics, so he hates simple machines and without apparent utility. It has a hammer with which it scares the bugs of Yggdrasil, which influences the powers and actions of the goddess.

Content of the work

Manga

Since the publication of the first volume in 1989, it has been well received all over the world and is considered by many to be one of the best manga of the 90s. Currently, 45 Tankoubons with 192 pages each have been published.

The Oh My Goddess! manga has been published in Spain since June 2005, edited by Norma Editorial under the name “Ah my Goddess!”.

In Mexico, the publication began in 1998 by Grupo Editorial Vid, making a total of 64 volumes (2 for each Tankoubon). Currently its edition is discontinued.

The structure of the manga is divided, or can be divided, more or less into plot "arcs", that is, a few episodes dedicated to a specific topic, and the evolution of all the characters throughout the plot is notorious which, starting from a very simple point, becomes a story that does not load too much on drama and more on romance and fun, although from time to time it falls a bit as a plot.

The evolution in the drawing style of the characters is notable over time, starting with very classic manga lines in terms of lines and shading, to vary completely from the drawing and design of the latter, however, this is due to the natural evolution in the design of the characters by Kōsuke Fujishima, since the series began in Japan at the end of the eighties and continues to date, something that is usually seen in other series (Dragon Ball is one of the famous examples).

Angels

Angels are creatures that join goddesses when they get an angel egg. They are very powerful creatures, and a goddess can usually only have one. They are precisely those that allow a goddess to use the most powerful magic, without having to go to the extreme of breaking her containment seals, which is a very serious fault, hence her excessive potential, and the almost inability of a goddess to have more than one, and even not being able to have, as is the Skuld problem. Although a goddess initially has no angel, when they get one, they become reflections of the goddess, empowering her host goddess, and move in sync with them.

Although all goddesses have an angel, they don't appear in the manga until much later than the anime.
