(9000) Hal is an asteroid belonging to the asteroid belt discovered on May 3, 1981 by Edward L. G. Bowell from the Anderson Mesa Station in Flagstaff, United States.
Designation and name
Hal was originally designated as 1981 JO. Later, in 1999, he named himself after HAL 9000, the on-board computer from the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey by British writer Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008).
Orbital characteristics
Hal orbits at an average distance from the Sun of 2.23 AU, being able to move as far as 2,697 AU and as close as 1,763 AU.
