The 77th edition of the Oscars rewarded the best films of 2004. Organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it took place at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles (United States) on February 27, 2005.

Nominations and winners

Clint Eastwood wins his second Best Director Oscar at age 74, making him the longest-reigning winner in the category, and the first actor to win a second Oscar in the same category. With his latest nomination and subsequent loss for directing The Aviator, Martin Scorsese then became the fifth director to join Robert Altman, Clarence Brown, Alfred Hitchcock and King Vidor to win a Most Best Director Oscar nominations without a win. For his part, Jamie Foxx became the second male actor, and the tenth overall, to earn two nominations in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories in the same year for acting in two different films. For playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator, Cate Blanchett became the first actress to win the statuette for playing an Oscar-winning actress. The song Across the River from the film The Motorcycle Diaries became the second song with non-English lyrics to win the Oscar for Best Original Song, the first to win this feat was the title song of the Greek film "Never On Sunday" in 1960. Catalina Sandino Moreno became the first and to date only Colombian actress to be nominated for the Best Lead Actress category.
