Nominations and winners

Chicago became the first musical to win the Best Picture Oscar, since the film Oliver! last did so in 1968. Adrien Brody wins the Oscar for Best Actor at age 29, becoming the youngest actor to win the Oscar in that category. With her thirteenth nomination, Meryl Streep became the actress with the most nominations in Oscar history. Meanwhile, Jack Nicholson earned his twelfth Oscar nomination, becoming the actor with the most Oscar nominations in history. Julianne Moore was the ninth performer to earn two nominations in the categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for participating in different films. The song Lose Yourself from the movie 8 Mile became the first rap song to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was the fourth sequel to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Unusually for the first and only time, an Oscar nomination is awarded to a fictional character: Donald Kaufman respectively, who despite being credited as co-author of the screenplay for the film Adaptation along with Charlie Kaufman in real life does not exist and ultimately would not win the award.

Roman Polanski was the Oscar winner to the best director by The pianist.
Adrien Brody was the Oscar winner for the best actor by The pianist.
Nicole Kidman was Oscar's best actress winner by The hours.
Chris Cooper was the Oscar winner to best cast actor by Adaptation.
Catherine Zeta-Jones was the Oscar winner to the best cast actress by Chicago.

In Memoriam

The annual assembly that the academy performs at each ceremony, this year recognized the following personalities: Lew Wasserman (executive), Richard Sylbert (artistic director), Eddie Bracken, George Sidney (director), Katy Jurado, Jack Brodsky (producer), Dudley Moore, John Frankenheimer (director), Rod Steiger, Norman Panama (writer), Horst Bucholtz, J. Lee Thompson (director), Leo McKern, Milton Berle, Ward Kimball (animator), Richard Crenna, Charles Guggenheim (documentary filmmaker), Rosemary Clooney, Daniel Taradash (writer), Signe Hasso, Walter Scharf (composer), Kim Hunter, Adolph Green (lyricist), Alberto Sordi, Conrad L. Curiosities

  • To date, it has been the only edition of the Oscars where the usual parade of great personalities was suspended by the red carpet before the gala. The war against Iraq had just erupted and the organizers of the ceremony thought it was best to suspend it.
