The 73rd edition of the Oscars rewarded the best films of 2000. Organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it took place at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Center in Los Angeles (United States United States) on March 25, 2001.

Nominations and winners

Gladiator became the second leading man to win the Best Picture Oscar, the first to do so being Ben-Hur in 1959. Steven Soderbergh was the third person to getting two nominations in the best director category for directing the films: Erin Brockovich and Traffic, the latter being where he would win the statuette. 卧虎藏龙 (Wò hǔ cáng lóng) became the third film to simultaneously receive a nomination in the categories of Best Film and Best Foreign Film, and the film also received ten nominations, making it the most nominated foreign-language film in Oscar history and with four categories won again 卧虎藏龙 (Wò hǔ cáng lóng) would become the most successful foreign-language film of the history, equaling the number of victories achieved by the Swedish film Fanny and Alexander in 1983. On the other hand, River Phoenix and Joaquin Phoenix have become the first sibling duo to earn a nomination in the category of best supporting actor, the first for Running on Empty in 1988 and the second for Gladiator in this edition.
