The year 51 (LI) was a common year beginning on a Friday of the Julian calendar, in force on that date.

In the Roman Empire, it was known as the Year of Caesar and Scipio's consulship (or less frequently, year 804 Ab urbe condita). The designation 51 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini became the prevalent European method of naming years.

Events

  • Emperor Claudio and T. Flavio Vespasiano exercise the consulate.
  • In the Roman Britannia, Governor Publio Ostorio Escápula defeats Carataco and the siluros in the territory of the ordovicos in the center of Wales. Carataco seeks refuge with Cartimandua, Queen of the Brigades in northern England, but she is allies of Rome and gives it to Ostorio. Despite the defeat, the whistles are still fighting.
  • The captured Carataco is displayed chained in the triumph of Claudio in Rome, but his dignified attitude convinces the emperor to forgive his life and allow his family to live free in the capital for a short period of time.

Births

  • October 24 - Domitian, Roman Emperor
