(5000) IAU is an asteroid belonging to the asteroid belt discovered by Eleanor Francis Helin on August 23, 1987 from the Mount Palomar Observatory, United States.

Designation and name

IAU was initially given the designation 1987 QN7. Later, in 1991, it was named with the initials of the International Astronomical Union.

Orbital characteristics

IAU orbits at an average distance of 2,536 ua from the Sun, being able to get as close as 1.86 ua and as far as 3,211 ua. The eccentricity of it is 0.2663 and the orbital inclination 6.273 degrees. It takes 1,475 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.

Physical characteristics

The absolute magnitude of IAU is 14.3.
