The year 47 (XLVII) was a common year beginning on a Sunday of the Julian calendar, in force on that date.

In the Roman Empire, it was known as the Year of the Consulate of Caesar and Vitellius (or less frequently, year 800 Ab urbe condita). The designation 47 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini became the prevalent European method of naming years.

Events

  • Claudio and Vitelio exercise the consulate in Rome. It is the only time when the duple of consuls was repeated, since they had already shared consular dignity in the year 43. The emperor Claudio was consul for the fourth time this year (third being on the throne, there was an earlier one under Caligula), while it was the third time for Vitelio.
  • The Romans build a fortification that will later become the city of Utrecht.
  • Plinio el Viejo, under the orders of Corbulón, takes part in the military campaign against Germania.
