400 (CD) was a leap year beginning on a Sunday of the Julian calendar, in effect on that date.
In the Roman Empire, the year was named as the consulate of Stilicho and Aurelianus, or less commonly, as 1153 Ab urbe condita, acquiring its name as 400 at the beginning of the Middle Ages, when the anno Domini was established.
It is the year 400 of the common era, of the anno Domini and of the first millennium, the hundredth and last year of the century IV and the first year of the 400s.

- Alarico invades the north of the Italian peninsula.
- In Thessaloniki (Greece) the mausoleum of Galerie becomes a church.
- The Council of Toledo is held in Spain.
