362 (CCCLXII) was a common year beginning on a Tuesday of the Julian calendar, in effect on that date.

In the Roman Empire, the year was named as the year of the consulate of Mamertine and Nevita, or less commonly, as 1115 Ab urbe condita, acquiring its name as 362 at the beginning of the Middle Ages, when the anno Domini was established.

Events

  • Julian brings together an army of 60,000 men, a fleet of 50 warships and a thousand transport vessels. He assures the cooperation of the king of Armenia, Arsaces, and marches on Persia. It makes a success behind another, pushing them to Ctesifonte. Sapor II asks for peace, but Julian rejects it. Soon, harassed by Persian guerrillas, the Roman army is forced to withdraw.
  • February 21: Athanasius returns to Alexandria.
  • October 22: A mysterious fire destroys the temple of Apollo in Dafne, outside Antioch.
  • 2 December: in Nicea and Nicomedia (Turkey) there is an earthquake of 6.8 degrees in the seismological scale of Richter (intensity of 10).
