The year 323 B.C. C. was a year of the pre-Julian Roman calendar. In the Roman Empire it was known as the Year of the Consulate of Longo and Cerretano (or less frequently, year 431 Ab Urbe condita).

Events

Macedonian Empire

  • 10-13 June: He died in Babylon, Alexander the Great, ten days after he fell ill after a long banquet.
  • The Partition of Babylon establishes the division of the territories conquered by Alexander the Great among its generals. The partition is the result of a compromise, essentially broken by Eumenes, after a conflict of opinion between the Meleagro party, who wished to give all power to Philip III (the illegitimate son of King Philip II of Macedonia by Philina of Larisa), and the party of Perdicas, who wished to wait for the birth of the heir of Alexander and his wife, Roxana (the future Alexander IV) to give him a regent.
  • By virtue of the agreement, Philip III becomes king, but Pérdicas, as regent, becomes the effective ruler of the empire of Alexander. Perdicas achieves the partition of the territories between the previous generals and Alexander's satraps that support him in his dispute with Meleagro.
  • Meleagro and about 300 of his supporters are killed by forces loyal to Pérdicas. Alejandro's first wife, Roxana, causes Statira to be killed (also called Barsine), his second wife.

Greece

  • Several northern cities, including Athens, rebel against the Macedonian Regent Antipatro after learning of Alexander's death. The actions of Athens are instigated by the speeches of the Athenian General Leóstenes and the Athenian speaker Hipérides.
  • Aristotle, faced by a strong anti-machedonia reaction, escapes from Athens and is established in Calcis.

Roman Republic

  • March 5 (15 of the pre-Julian calendar): begins the consulate of Cayo Sulpicio Longo (for the second time) and Fifth Aulio Cerretano.

Births

  • Alexander IV of Macedonia, son of Alexander the Great and Roxana (m. 309 BC).

Deaths

  • June 10: Diogenes de Sinope, Greek philosopher (n. 412 BC).
  • June 10-13: Alexander the Great, Macedonian king and outstanding military, political and conqueror.
  • Cycle the Black, Macedonian warrior (n. 367 B.C.)
  • Licurgo, attic speaker (n. 396 B.C.)
  • Meleagro, General Macedonian.
  • Parisátide, wife of Alexander the Great.
  • Statira (also called Barsine), wife of Alexander the Great.
