In the Roman Empire the year was named as that of the consulate of Maximus and Aquilinus or, less commonly, as 1039 Ab urbe condita, being its denomination as 286 later, from the Middle Ages, when the Anno Domini was established.

- April 1: Diocletian elevates Maximian to the title of Augustus, or co-emperator.
