The year 284 (CCLXXXIV) was a leap year beginning on a Tuesday of the Julian calendar, in force on that date.

In the Roman Empire the year was named as the consulate of Carino and Numeriano or, less commonly, as 1037 Ab urbe condita, being its denomination as < i>284 later, from the Middle Ages, when the Anno Domini was established.

  • Brothers and co-emperators Carino and Numeriano exercise the consulate.
  • November 20: Diocletian is acclaimed emperor of Rome after the death of Numerian. Carino would live until 285 claiming the throne.
  • Bagauda revolt in Galia.
  • The new administrative organization of the Roman Hispania begins, which will be divided into six provinces. They are integrated into the Dicesis Hispaniarum. The ancient Hispania Citerior was divided into: Tarraconensis, Carthaginiensis and Gallaecia; held. Lusitania and the Baetica. Added as sixth province Mauritania Tingitana.
