The year 222 (CCXXII) was a common year beginning on a Monday of the Julian calendar, in force on that date.

In the Roman Empire the year was named as the consulate of Antoninus and Severus or, less commonly, as 975 Ab urbe condita, being its denomination as < i>222 later, from the Middle Ages, when the Anno Domini was established.

Events

  • Heliogabalo had adopted his cousin Alexander Severo to be his heir, sharing with him this year's consulate. However, jealous of his popularity, while the Pretorian Guard distrusted him for his extravagances, he attempted against his life without success. Heliogabalo deprived his cousin of his titles, revoked the consulate and circulated the news that Alexander was close to death. A riot broke out, and the guard demanded to see Heliogabalo and Alexander; on March 11, the soldiers shouted at Alexander, while they ignored Heliogabalo, who ordered a summary arrest and execution of anyone who had intervened in this revolt. In response, the pretorians killed Heliogabalo and his mother.
