2005 (MMV) was a common year beginning on a Saturday according to the Gregorian calendar. It was the fifth year of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium. It was the fifth year of the first decade of the 21st Century XXI and the sixth of the 2000s. It was designated:

  • 1 January:
    • In Peru, the coup known as: "Andahuaylazo". Antauro Humala, brother of former President Ollanta Humala captures Andahuaylas police station. There were four cops and a reservist dead.
    • It is fulfilled 5 years of the feared effect 2000 (Y2K), whose discomfort had the world in vile, especially the computer programs that were to be reset to 1980, which later did not represent a capital problem for the world.

  • 1 February:
    • The gene that triggers the beginning of puberty is discovered.

  • 2 July:
    • Nine simultaneous concerts are held in different cities on the planet (Live 8) to demand the end of poverty in the world, which also marked the temporary return of Pink Floyd.
    • In Utrecht (Netherlands) the World Championship is finished sub-20 and Argentina is crowned world champion for the fifth time of this category after defeating Nigeria by 2-1.
  • 3 July:
    • in Spain, the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero approves equal marriage. Spain becomes the third country in the world to adopt LGBT marriage.
    • In Almeria, Spain, the closing ceremony of the 15th Mediterranean Games 2005.
  • 6 July:
    • In Singapore, IOC members designate the city of London as the setting for the 2012 Olympic Games, overcoming the favourite Paris and Madrid and two other cities, New York and Moscow.
    • In El Salvador, police officers violently disband a concentrated student demonstration in front of the central campus of the University of El Salvador.

August

  • August 5: Fairious fire in Casavieja, in the province of Ávila, Spain, which sheltered the life of a person. It boiled over 800 hectares of mountain in the Sierra de Gredos.
  • 6 August: Flight 1153 from Tuninter, an ATR 72 from Tuninter on the route from Bari, Italy, to Yerba, Tunisia, crashed into the Mediterranean Sea when it was over 18 miles from the city of Palermo, dying sixteen of the thirty-nine people travelling on board.

  • 14 August:
    • Flight 522 of Helios Airways, a Boeing 737 crashes at 40 km from Athens due, apparently, to a failure in the cooling and bragging system, the 115 passengers and the 6 crew members died.
    • In Boom, Belgium, the Tomorrowland festival is opened.
  • 14-21 August: X Olimpiada Iberoamericana de Química 2005, in Lima, Peru.
  • August 15: the use of non-tetraethylene-lease gasoline is in force in Venezuela.
  • August 16: Flight 708 from West Caribbean, a Boeing MD-82 plane crashes into the population of Machiques Venezuela and its 160 occupants die. A helicopter with 17 Spanish military personnel on board is also crashed in Afghanistan, who died (see helicopter crash in Afghanistan on 16 August). On the same day, the Israeli eviction from the Gaza Strip began, which was considered part of the territory of the future Palestinian state.
  • August 21st: from the city of Cologne (Germany) ends the World Youth Day at Mariendfeld. More than 2.53 million young people attend a closing mass being considered the largest event of assistance of people in German history, thus surpassing the fall of the Berlin Wall.
  • 23 August:
    • An extratropical cyclone affects the Uruguayan coast, produces serious material damage in the departments of Uruguay of Montevideo, Canelones, Maldonado, Rocha, San José and Cologne. Deaths directly and indirectly due to the temporary period are 10 people and damages for more than $10 million make it the most devastating time in the country's history.
  • 24 August
    • Colombian singer Kaleth Morales died in traffic accident.
    • Flight 204 from TANS Peru, a Boeing 737-244 from TANS Peru crashes 5 km from the airport of the Peruvian city of Pucallpa, during a strange hail storm, killing 40 of its 98 occupants.
  • August 28: At 9:30 a.m., the mayor of New Orleans evacuate the area immediately anticipating the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. Those who cannot leave, are ordered to go to the Superdome.
  • August 29: Hurricane Katrina, as a Category 3 storm hits land at 6:10 a.m. CDT (11:10 a.m. UTC). The eye is just east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It produces substantial material damage in the United States states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and West Florida. This date is known as Black Monday ("black lights") by the inhabitants of New Orleans and many residents of the Gulf Coast. At that time the death count is 55. Katrina reaches Category 5.
  • 30 August:
    • After Hurricane Katrina: the death count in Biloxi (Misisipi) could reach 80. Mayor A.J. Holloway states that Katrina "is our tsunami," comparing the catastrophe with the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Residents speak of a louder cyclic mare than Hurricane Camille. Highway 90 along Gulfport (Misisipi State) is destroyed. New Orleans, Louisiana, almost completely flooded when the dams break along Lake Pontchartrain. At least an attempt was made to repair the dam, but without success. Gas filters contaminate flooded waters. The first evacuation site in the Louisiana Superdome is safe, with water that only reached one meter outside. There are no figures of death. Governor Kathleen Blanco orders the evacuation of anyone who remains in New Orleans. The cyclic mare has completely destroyed the elevated Interstate 10 road that connects the east side of New Orleans with the continental Louisiana on the east end of Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Red Cross declares that the relief effort will extend beyond the attacks of 11 September 2001.
    • Oil reaches a quote of 70/bbl US$ for the second time, closes to $69.35 on the New York Stock Exchange. Gas is expected to rise too. More than 1000 deaths were initially reported and it is estimated that the damage caused could amount to $26 billion, the most costly in United States history.
